I know everyone will expect me to say the Beatles but putting them to one side because they will make the thread so one sided it would be pointless, who else is a contender for the crown?

Can I offer U2, AC/DC and at the risk of being hounded, the Sex Pistols.

Any other offerings or denials of my choices?

U2 were ok for the first couple of albums until Bonio realized how far up his own arse he could get.

Speaking of U2, anyone who goes about saying the his name is 'THE [insert word] ' deserves to be flogged to death with a big piss soaked stick.

oasis and Coldplay are good shouts.

Bob Dylan if he counts as a band. Wrote a few decent songs but other people play them better and, apart from those greatest hits, he was generally just a miserable, whining bag of wind and piss. How so many people worship him is beyond me.

Never liked Led Zeppelin either. Their better stuff is just overblown rip offs of perfectly good blues riffs with some fucker bellowing over the top and their worst is pretentious wailing like Stairway...

As Dylan mentioned , I must mention the most overrated Brit, namely Rod Stewart. If he was half as good as he thinks he is, he would be a great.

Think Dave Grohl has said a number of times that one of his biggest influences is Husker Du, so the Bob Mould comparison makes sense, plus he sang with the Foo Fighters on Dear Rosemary on the Wasting Light album

Stereo bastard phonics, just the worst pub band in history. Also have always hated the Manic Street Preachers for some reason.

Agree with a lot already. Sex pistols coldplay.

Can I add Keane.

And controversially Amy Winehouse and that Scottish fella out now and that ginger fella who used to support pools.

Trying to draw a line here between overrated groups and those I just plain don't like or are in a shite genre.
One group that sticks in my mind as having no particular talent is INXS.
For my outsider I'll take Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I agree about Rod Stewart. He lost his voice 30 years ago but still hasn't realised he's now shite.

There's a market for ancient tripe though. People pay a fortune to see The Rolling Stones and almost all of Mick Jagger's singing is actually done by Bernard Fowler who left Tackhead to join them sometime around the end of the 80s. They just keep Jagger's efforts low in the mix while Fowler the backing singer comes through nice and loud doing his Mick Jagger impression. He's even on their records nowadays. At least Rod Stewart croaks himself.

When they did a tour a dozen or so years back they included three sizes of venue: stadiums, concert halls, and small clubs, like a well-known one in Pigalle whose name escapes me.
At the smallest of those venues, I do believe Jagger himself sang. Maybe because the audience was too close for him to cheat. If that were me I'd have retired the instant I made my first couple of million (adjusted for inflation that was probably about 50 thou at the time).

Talking of concerts, I've seen both Dylan and the Pogues in concert and though Nobel Bob was bad, the Pogues completely outclassed him in their level of can't-be-arsedness.

Saw The Pogues a few times and they've ranged from brilliant, varied and downright beautiful at times, to a sort of pissed up Irish Ramones and, the last time, a bunch of uninterested session musicians fronted by the shell of a very damaged man.

I saw the Rolling Stones in Roundhay Park in Leeds the day before I was going to see The Clash at the University in 1982. Got a free ticket so i went and they were OK. Scary to think that that was nearly forty years ago and they were looking already looking very old. I suppose that's because I was what now seems like very young.

I'm not sure a group I've never heard of can be overrated but there again I don't get to hear the same music as you.

I've remembered another one having just suffered them on the radio.
Deep Purple, especially A Child in Time. 20th century version of Mozart's A Musical Joke.
I actually liked them before they kicked the best musicians out to replace them withe the noisy ones.

The number ol overrated bands is rapidly exceeding the number of rated ones.
Anybody dare suggest a band that's just rated?
(Sussex fuck off with Rod Stewart.)
