I am trying to recall things that were gob smackingly made of quercus quercus when I was a kid. We called some cricket balls corkies. We didn't drink wine so everything was screw-top. Although there seem to still be plenty of cork stoppers about (maybe less so in Nottingham like). I think lifebuoys were made of cork but there's not exactly one on every street corner.

What particular cork item were you thinking of, Mr PIN?

I only moved down here in 1995 and it all seemed to have vanished by then.

For some reason the other day I remember looking round houses with me mam and dad in the early 80s, and there was one somewhere off Oxy Road which seemed to have cork on every surface. Ceiling tiles, the lot.

That got me thinking about the placemats and stuff we had, and everyone else for that matter.

Or even Balls!

Weirdly I had TalkSPORT on in the car the other day and they were on about that weird shrove Tuesday football match with the ‘uppers’ and ‘downers’ were they jump in rivers and stuff. The big medicine ball they use is made of...... Cork!

Bulletin boards were always made of the stuff, had 1 up until I had a new kitchen put in, them spiky coloured pins used to fall out and barefoot me used to find it when I raided the fridge in the small hours in search of cold water!
