Leeds United at home in the cup , arguably our biggest game in my time supporting Pools , perhaps bigger than Sunderland even. Despite the result , what an occasion. Apart from the midget Brian Flynn, the Leeds team were huge and towered above our lot. The Vic was rammed and the only places you could breathe were that little strip of terracing between the Town End and Clarence Road stand, and the corner near the Rink End where a group of Sunderland fans from the collieries had congregated.

Some great guys played for us that day.

Mark Lawrence - a superb player, shame he didn't fulfill his potential.

Big Bad Bob.

John Linacre.

And George Smith - if only we had someone like him today! He was 'orrible - but ours!

I was in the Millhouse seats and even that was rammed, with people sat on the exit aisles. Surrounded by people from Hartlepool supporting Leeds!

Shame no footage survives of that game. I remember the highlights on local tv were grainy and dark, our floodlights were shite at the time, night game you used to see black dots in front of your eyes, though that could be my eyes like

The main thing I remember about that game was Paul Hart's shot that hit the rink end crossbar. It was still rattling a fortnight later !!!!
You must have been a small boy, Mr Horden if you thought the Leeds players were huge. Paul Madely and Paul Hart were just around six feet and they were the tallest, although I don't know about the goalie. As I didn't reckon them to be giants as such, I checked a few and then elected to check them all, apart from the goalie. None of the players they had out that night is listed as being over six feet but of course that could be wrong. I have to admit I thought Hart was about six feet two.

It was actually 40 years ago. Easy for me to remember as I had just turned 18. Seems such a long time ago, and I suppose it is.

I believe the match had been postponed twice due to the weather and there was a bit of controversy when the Leeds fans were given our beloved rink end. I was not amused at that but I stood in the north west corner as near as I could.

I was in the Town End, it was rammed, with my cousin a Leeds fan who'd come from Washington to watch. I'm sure John Hawley scored that night but ITMC says not. It was freezing and the pitch was barely playable as it'd been postponed twice as you say derwent.

Also Bob Newton was class that night, he wouldn't have looked out of place in their team. Still one of the best players i've ever seen in a Pools shirt, he was so strong on the ball......if only our current team had that.

Didn't Leeds (God bless em) get changed before and after in The Grand? I seem to remember Vince Barker standing by the players gate as they all walked straight off the pitch, through the Clarence Road 'facilities' and out to get on the bus - grinning insanely and flicking the V at each and everyone of them!

I was 14. They seemed huge, compared to our players anyway, Newton apart. Not just in height but certainly in weight, some carrying lets say a bit of lard, like Graham, Hawley, Currie.

He was immense, and coolly stuck away those penners. Never froze on the big occasion did Bob , replicating what he had done v Palace 12 months earlier, scoring twice. rolf

Not so sure it was in retaliation, Mark.
Think he just set out to "do" him ( or any one of them probably) from the off !

I was there that night too and travelled down from Sunderland twice only for it to be postponed due to the weather. Remember most of your memories on here. I was in the Town End somewhere just up above the goal and it was sardined. I couldn't move to go for a piss or food. When Bob took those two penalties I only saw him hit the ball and knew it had gone in because of the crowd's reaction. Rust coming down off the corrugated iron roof. Beefy Bob a hero and a villain but a crowd pleaser. Shame he and The Houch played for Pools in such poor teams. Thanks for the memories folks.

I was there, in the standing bit between the town end and the Clarence Road stand - it was packed.

I also went to the game a couple of days later on the Saturday, Leeds was on a Thursday night. Only 2200 there v Grimsby, won 1-0, pissing down with rain, 2 or 3 of the crush barriers in the Town End behind the goal were seriously buckled and it made you think of the carnage that could of ensued had they gave way during the Leeds game.
