Similar situation as for tonight, a win to secure our status.

Also it was free entry if you had gone to the away game at Mansfield on the Sat before.

Life was easier for Peter Beardsley back in those days before his wife rejected Jesus and the Albanian fella lived next door. I bet he still celebrated with a Chicken Wrap though and he might he even got his joke book out in the dressing room after.

Beardsley won that game for us single-handedly.

He also, despite not scoring, virtually won the 3-0 Home game against Donny on his own.

Was that the great goal from edge of box following a corner?

That was on his debut, against Cambridge i believe.

Beardo didnt have the legs but he was still a cut above. Probably the biggest player thats ever played for us, england international, went to 2 world cups, millions spent on him.

You could build some team around that bench.

I remember that debut goal, I'd been visiting the folks but was so depressed about Pools prospects that I'd already gone back home deciding to skip the game.... I got back to the news that Beardsley had signed, and phoned to say "I'm coming back for this...." - he must have added 2K to the gate all on his own.

The legs were fading, the brain was still sharp - there were times he didn't look that special at all, but now and again you'd get that flash of his former glory that could turn a game, enough (together with Chris Turner and some additions like Freestone) to save us that year.....

He's done a few interviews since where hes said he tried to make passes that the other players couldn't read.

Which is fair enough, he was still getting england caps and playing for newcastle just a few years before.

He was deffo making clever passes expecting the runs of people to anticipate who weren't able to, which the moron part of the support didn't really understand cue the usual groans and shouts.

The other thing that counted against him was that was probably the worst state our pitch was in for years due to it being shared with West, was like a ploughed field most games

Luscombe was the biggest player that's ever played for us.

I thought Athletico Mince was brilliant before but these Beardo laments/updates kill me

The Beardsley updates are fantastic. Still can't get away with any of Andy Dawsons material, I put up with him purely because of Bob.

Weirdly I never think about Beardsley being in that team. For some reason I never put him in the same bracket as saving us as Strodder and (less so) Jones and Freestone did.

Aye! my dad took dragged my mam along to her first ever away game cos of this offer. She had the pleasure of meeting Mick Kelly in The Nursery prior to the Orient game. That wasn't her first home game, she took me to Bournemouth league cup replay in 1974 when my dad had to attend an important union meeting.

Both are dead now and Pools are still shit.

Garry Strodder eh? Must've been one of the hardest bastards ever to play for us !
Wish we had somebody of his ilk now.

Thanks for highlighting that. How the fook would you know what I'm like?. What I do is say how it is, and some people can't handle it.
