I thought the Spanish ref from last night was bad enough, but this has topped it.

Still, a nice little Hacienda for his retirement in the South of Spain won't go amiss ...

How the fuck is that a penalty? No excuse for Buffons reaction but you can understand his reaction.

Oliver wants sacking.

Pushed or touched? The defender showed desire to clear it the forward stood still the with the goal at his mercy!?

Definite push in the back, player had his eyes on the ball the whole time, went to chest it down for a tap in and got pushed.

Buffon is the embarrassing one there.

I think if the striker had as much commitment and bottle as the defender he’s have scored and we wouldn’t be taking about a penalty.

I think it's a difficult one.

It was a nudge in the back and the defender didn't touch the ball so that's a foul but it's the way that Lucas fella's legs buckled that makes me think there wasn't really much in the contact.

I don't think I'd have had the bottle to give it to be honest. To give it I'd have to be 100% certain and that probably wasn't.....but if that happened at Pools I'd be shouting for the penalty.

Penalty, red for Buffon and yellow for the defender imo.

Fair play to Ronaldo mind.

It’s glossed over by Ronaldo’s ‘bottle’ as well, great penalty as expected but if he’d missed they were playing extra time against ten men with an ex dodgy Arsenal keeper in nets.

It was soft at best, the forward made it why wasn’t he just trying to score?

Juventus complaining about the referee and a last second injury time penalty against them... If you know a bit about the Serie A and the history of Italian football, you can't help appreciating the irony of this situation.

It’s not a 100% is it?

In slow motion from one angle it is, at full speed those hands in the back are as the defender is jumping running at full pace the forward is on his heels looking like he’s not fancying physical contact.

Lineker, Owen, Ferdinand and Gerrard have just all agreed that it was as best 50:50 so maybe the decision wasn’t embarrassing in hindsight (I had not seen a replay at that point) it still ruined a great tie for me and deprived it of its natural and fair outcome. Oliver looks like a bloke who wants to make a name for himself.

Was a penalty. He pushed him over. And Buffon, passions running high was correctly sent off for his reaction.

Would everyone think the same if it was a Sutton striker and a pools defender.

The game will soon be non-contact

Should probably watch a reply before posting next time then.

I watched it live, seen a few replays n felt it was a definite pen.

Of course the Madrid lad goes down easy. But he’s been pushed over in the 92nd minute. He’s gunna make sure he goes down. Just like every single player on the planet would.

If it was higuain at the other end he would have done exactly the same, just a bit slower, Cos he’s fat.

I’d think the pools defender, most likely Laing, was stupid for going in like that in the 92nd minute.

Don’t give the referee a decision to make

So it's a pen cos the defender is stupid enough to make a challenge in the 92 minute forcing the ref to make a decision when the ref will have known full well the striker has gone down like a sack of shit.....

As I say, let's make it a non contact sport and then there's no debate to be had on these fooking ridiculous game changing / match winning decisions.

Hopefully they'll get the scousers in the semi who will turn them over.

I fancy Liverpool to do really well. That front 3 is unplayable n they seem to be much better at the back now.

Definite pen, striker wasn't even aware of defender behind him, and looked as though he was about to stoop to head the ball. Oliver best ref in England , though all refs look as though they have went back this season due to all the feckin rule changes, VAR and the drama queen culture we now live in.

It's a penalty. 97 and a half percent.

And he wouldn't have gotten out of that stadium alive if he hadn't given it.

Would have loved Juve to beat them like.

Not a penalty for me, the defender had to challenge and contact was minimal. The attacker was on his way down and didn't look like he would score. Anyone who says that is a penalty is soft.

As an aside, fair play to Italian football over the last two days, almost knocked out Barcelona and Real Madrid both with 3 goal head starts, so much for boring defensive football.

Two angles to show the lad was on his way down before the actual challenge. There's another image with the defender's hand on his back which also shows Vasquez with his legs already trailing behind him.

If I was Buffon I don't think I'd of managed his restraint

I made my comments without even seeing the game but just knew the striker would have cheated (how arroagant am I  )

I've now seen it and surprise surprise, the striker knows exactly where the defender is and what is coming, waited for the slightest touch and went down.

Those that think it's a penalty must combust every week watching pools expecting challenges like that to be given as penalties.....

It’s another one that highlights how VAR will ruin the World Cup as well.

How could they possibly prove that was the correct decision and how long would it have taken to come to any sort of decision?

Even after that it’s still split between those who think it’s a penalty and those who remember football is a contact sport. Ten times the contact goes on at every set piece if that’s a push!? With VAR you could find a penalty at every corner. You would still have a split though and it’s why VAR will never work in football.

Right or wrong the referees decision has to stand unless it’s a line decision or a glaring error like Man City’s disallowed goal the other night.

I am also hearing people calling Oliver ‘brave’ it would have been far braver if he’d given one like that to Juventus, I someone doubt he would have. I personally don’t think making such a marginal and debatable call to decide such a big game is good or brave refereeing it smacks of ego to me.

I think we will all rue the day, when refs or in future their hundreds of assistants finally get everything correct. Of course it won't happen because we are all wired up differently. Why don't people just realise that mistakes will happen occasionally, not that I think a mistake was made in this case, and that there will always be two sides to the coin , differences of opinion, and that actually its all these incidents up for debate, that make football the great game it is, lets not ruin it, FFS ! what would we have to talk/argue about if every decision was the correct one? which I have already said will never happen, regardless of having a 37th official , goal line technology or VAR.

Still images.

Watch it back at full speed, the striker never once looks anywhere but towards the ball. Unless he's some kind of iguana how is he seeing the defender?

He stoops forward to chesk the ball down as he can see (because he's in front of him) that the keeper is rooted to his line. He'd then have a simple tap in. The defender then comes and pushes him in the back before bringing his leg round for the ball.

Fucking hell, I wish you lot would get this pashunate about pools. Maybe we need to re-sign Fenwick?

Hey ! leave it ! I'm enjoying it

Think PJ was agreeing with what I was saying about the game in general concerning controversial decisions. If he thought Oliver was wrong last night, that's his call, and just goes to prove what I was saying.

Look how on here we all disagree about how the club should be run, how we should play, who should be in charge etc. Its part of life , but I think these days, with all the forms of communication available , people get a bit too hysterical, about not just things like this , but everything.

You can it’s called balanced debate and being able to see both sides of the coin.

I didn’t agree with the decision but I think the decision should stand thinking forward to the nonsense ahead with VAR in the summer.

I after agree over the VAR calls, that decision last night just proves it wont solve anything, 3 referees will give it, 3 referees will not, its still opinion n all that.

VAR is being rushed through for this summer, i can see it being mental, 44 of the 48 refereeing nations being used at this summers tournament dont currently use VAR so will have to learn pretty fast about when to ask for it.

It's gunna be pretty shitty in the pub celebrating a goal, beer flying everywhere, then the referee pulls it back because of a foul from 2 minutes ago at the other end of the pitch.

I imagine if the goal pulled back is one of England's , the beer will continue flying everywhere

You can just imagine it, the landlord ashen faced, starting to pull the shutters down, the barmaid on the phone to the police, in the minutes leading up to a decision being made.

Wish we had VAR in the 2014 World Cup, I'm still convinced Sterlings goal went in against Italy.
