I think people mostly don't notice the drummer in a band, meaning the drummer's probably doing exactly what they're supposed to, But sometimes you can't help but notice the drummer, which may or may absolutely not be a good thing.
Groups that come to mind are the Stone Roses and Placebo.

Anyone got any pet drummer likes or hates?

Two that spring to mind are Green Day and Foo Fighters,

but Blondie's drummer also comes close.

Taylor Hawkins knows how to bang a drum.

David Lovering - Pixies
Ben Johnston - Biffy Clyro

Both know their way round a kit too

The drummer in the Buzzcocks was notorious for being a bit -er- speedy. Suited their style though.

Personal faves - Dave Grohl on all of QOTSA's Songs For The Deaf
Gerry Conway on all of Fotheringay's LP

Travis Barker was pretty amazing last year when i seen blink.

He’s in about 63 bands too often playing rap rock metal etc so he’s got amazing range.

Bongo Herman improved every record he played on but I suppose that's more percussion. Sly Dunbar and Style Scott are/were both excellent and came up with new sounds as well as being good at all the other stuff.

Doesn't make or break the group by any means, but Charlie Watts is one of my favourite musicians of all time just for the contrast of his poise and dignity to the rest of the Rolling Stones.

His drumming on Another Girl Another Planet is what makes it so much better than the original in my opinion.

His drumming is what ruins a classic song. He should be impaled on his own paradiddle.

Was in the gym this morning and that song came on first on my playlist, the good version, the blink one.

If he was dead, which he probably should be, Peter Perrett would be turning in his grave at the thought of a gym. Given your surroundings it's for the best that you listened to the inferior version made for children, shows some respect.

Good shout. Whoever the main drum gadgie in the Upsetters was superb as well, but I reckon Lee Perry could take some of that credit too.

Carlton Barrett on most of the 60s stuff but he joined The Wailers in the early 70s. Sly Dunbar on most of the Black Ark stuff. He pops up everywhere and is virtually always superb.

Lee Perry was an excellent talent spotter as well as a production genius, every version of The Upstters includes loads of top musicians.

Was it Dunbar who was on 'King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown'? There is some seriously sexy beats on that album.

Used to play in same football team in Swindon with this lovely lad. tragically committed suicide in 1999.

Very underrated.

Kevin Wilkinson - China Crisis

"On 17 July 1999, drummer Kevin Wilkinson committed suicide by hanging himself at the age of 41. Wilkinson had played with a wide variety of bands including The Waterboys, Fish, The Proclaimers, Squeeze and with Howard Jones. In 2000, Daly contributed a track to a tribute compilation to Wilkinson, Green Indians"

Reni is the ultimate for people of my vintage.

Have seen Foals a few times including a very small venue. Their drummer is unreal.

Brilliant record. Think that was Barrett doing a bit of session work between Wailers tours but one of the bass players is Robbie Shakespeare so there's a good chance Dunbar is on there somewhere as well.

Joy Division's Steve Morris always impressed me, particularly on the track 'She's lost control', and K.J's Paul Ferguson who alway's got a strong marching/rowing type beat going.

Moe Tucker didn't half belt them out for the Velvet Underground, especially on their longer live versions of the more uptempo ones. 'What Goes On' in particular.

I don't know about the Airforce or any other group Baker played in, but I listened to Cream and Blind Faith recently and although I enjoyed them at the time and bought their albums, their music hasn't aged well at all for me. In fact a lot of it sounds a bit crappy nowadays ( bbolt ).
Apart from which 13-minute drum solos aren't really my thing. My drum solo tolerance level is about 20 seconds.

I saw Ginger Baker's Air Force at the Rock on the Tyne weekend at Gateshead Stadium in the 80's, seem to remember I enjoyed the performance. but the standouts for me were Rory Gallagher and Ian Dury and the Blockheads. It always amused me in the 70's going to Workingmen's Clubs in Hartlepool on a weekend and the group for the night would take a break for 5 minutes to allow the drummer to do a obligatory drum solo, and hardly anyone in the room took any notice of it!

The Furniture Detectives wouldn't be the band that everyone loves without their drummer.

Their first one was shit - Isaac Ichabod. He left after their first single to form Towel Rail with half of Shady Painter. They got shot of him soon as well.

The FDs never looked back after Bazman picked up the sticks.

Jess Bazman who used to play for Free Wardrobes on Sundaes? He couldn't drum his way out of a Welsh Dresser.

Is it contentious to say Phil Collins?

I don't think it's contentious, though I'm not sure he took Genesis to another level.
Collins's bad press comes from the gig he did with the temporarily reformed Led Zeppelin at Live Aid. It was a train wreck for a whole lot of reasons, most of which he was not responsible for. When you have the silly idea of Concorde-hopping to fit two gigs into the same day you can't expect to have much rehearsal time.

Bev Bevan was to The Move what Keith Moon was to The Who. Both great bands but the drumming made them stand out from the rest. He also drummed on Mr Blue Sky of course!
