Like, I dunno, Vince Clarke?

In the same line of "Was it better before?"

Sad to say because he went downhill fast when he got kicked out, but the Stones after they got rid of Brian Jones - and they used to be 'his' group.

Wish they'd knocked it on the head 30 year ago though.

Music not really my forte, but I'll throw a couple in just to hopefully start a riot.

AC/DC

Joy Division/New Order

The Beatles were better after Paul died in 1966 and was replaced by a lookalike.

Yes, improved immeasurably when Steve Howe joined after the second album (Time and a Word), and then again when Rick Wakeman joined after the third album (The Yes album)

Big Star: when Chris Bell left, Alex Chilton was pretty much left to his own devices and that gave us two classics, two groundbreaking LPs, much more adventurous than Big Star's first album.

While I'm at it: Maurice Deebank was one great guitarist but to me Felt made tsome of their best stuff after he left including Forever Breathes the Lonely Word, probably their strongest, most coherent LP.

I agree that Steve Hogarth nails it, but I still like listening to their second and third albums and I'd put Jigsaw in my top 10 "layman's prog" tracks any day.

Which was good for a couple more albums, but it took the Buggles to put an end to their eventual silliness (not that I especially considered them an improvement).
Rick Wakeman eating a take-away during the their live performance while he waited for his turn says it all. It's a toss up between them and ELP as to who was first past the point-of-no-return post.

But not the Sugarcubes, though to be fair it would have been pretty hard to improve with nobody else left.

It's a shame that shouty bloke didn't leave. He ruined tons of their tunes.
