Not having that all. John Kongos all day. Didn't need some drugged up bell-end whistling and twisting his melon over it.

Stranglers better than Dionne though!

The Clash doing The Equals "Police On My Back" takes some beating, as does Costello covering "Peace Love and Understanding".

All about individual opinion though, isn't it?

I think Disturbed do a cracking version of sound of silence, I can't quite make my mind up whether I prefer that one or the S & G version.

Isn't the mark of a great cover version that it does something unexpected with a familiar original?

Dunno about better or worse, different is good!

St Etienne 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' pisses all over the Neil Young original.

Their version of 'Kiss And Make Up' is also better than the Fieldmice original. Sorry Chip, if you're reading this.

A great version of Bad Companie's song.

Sex Pistols version of No Fun is better than the Stooges original and URoy's version of The Paragon's Wear You To The Ball takes the honours as well.

To be fair practically anybody's version is better than Cohen's, and I'm a big Leonard Cohen fan.

I think the one that eclipses the original by the most 1000% in history is the Rolling Stones version of Route 66.
A 2-year old kid could have beat the original mind. But they did it best.

I hugely disagree, I think Disturbed totally miss the point of the original being a bit eery and creepy.

Can I be the person to say Hurt by Johnny Cash? Because I just did.

Indeed Phil, think Trent Reznor was quoted as saying "the day I lost my song" after hearing Johnny Cash's brilliant version.
Don't mind NIN, but the original is rubbish....

Johnny Burnette's 'You're Sixteen' was covered by (now Sir) Ringo Starr and was a number one hit. Better than the original? Never, never never!

'She's My Best Friend' by the Wedding Present is at least on a par with the Velvet Underground original.

How anyone can mention Dionne Warwick's version of "Walk on By" in the same Solar System as The Stranglers version staggers me. One is a flawlessly elegant masterpiece and the other a snotty tuneless mess. The only thing positive I can say about The Stranglers effort is that they put their own slant on it - by stomping all over it. As for comparing Bobby Troup to The Stones, in my opinion they're both very different and both very brilliant! My favourite cover version is Jeff Beck's take on "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", not better but certainly equal.

If she'd sang the whole song instead of the la la la bits maybe, but they spoil it for me.

These are all at least as good as the originals:

Billy Paul – Let ‘Em In
The Sundays – Wild Horses
Sunshine of Your Love – Ella Fitzgerald
I Feel For You - Chaka Khan
Superstar – Sonic Youth
Marguerita Time – Dexy’s Midnight Runners

The Detroit Cobras are essentially a covers band, and I can think of several of their recordings which shade the originals. Most of them in a very different style, and they have recorded hardly any duds.

If the Furniture Detectives released covers of any of the songs mentioned in this thread then I have no doubt that they would better than the original, especially when played on the early morning show on Bermuda FM

You're not wrong Tom. What do you think the best cover of one of FD's songs is though?

I'm going for 'Crumbling Flaky Wall Around My Heart' from the 'Adverse Camber' album, there's a brilliant version of it by The Priority Seats which I don't think has been released, only ever seen live versions of it on Youtube.

May pop along although they could do with working on their logo/font as "Detectives" is hardly visible.

I think the poster may need amending, it looks like it's "Michael Gallagher & Furniture Detectives". FD are a separate entity and that needs to be made clear.

We need a charco photoshop.
