Can anyone recommend somewhere cheap and cheerful to stay in London. My son wants to go with his partner, I've told him there isn't anywhere in the capital that would fall into that category!

Travelodge or Premier Inn near the eXcel place are reasonably priced. In all honesty I'd look to stay outside and train it in (or just not go at all).

If it’s outside of term time, most of the universities rent rooms out in their halls.

IMHO in a former life went to London often. You can get some GOOD cheap Hotels/good deals on expensive sounding Hotels , but also some really BAD smelly, dirty cheap hotels! Do a bit of homework on Trip Advisor type sites. Also IMHO don't treat London as a big city, more of little villages joined to each other. In the" little villages" you can have meals / drinks as cheap as up here, as they are all competing for local business. Stay away from the tourist areas as everything is expensive! As for travel in London, choose your routes and buy an Underground ticket /all day thingy, covering those zones, works out cheaper.

Take this with a pinch of salt as haven't been down for a few years! Putney Bridge was a nice/relatively cheap area and fairly near the office.

You can get some good deals on Superbreak.com. You get train and hotel as a package. Usually works out cheaper than paying individually.

Premier Inn Hub - 2 mins to Piccadilly and 2 mins to Covent Garden. Cheap as chips and no need to use Tubes. Room very small though but is comfortably furnished and has everything you need including cafe where breakfast is great for £5.

Stay in apartment rather than a hotel room, often you find they are far better appointed and in great locations for a fraction of the price than even a fairly shabby London hotel.

Airbnb is decent and has some cheap places. As long as you're fairly close to a tube station you're fine.

Travelodge on Grays Inn Road, right near Kings Cross, I stay there every time I go now. Cracking pub down the road too, though I forget what they call it.

You don't need a travel card now, just use your contactless card the same way as an oyster, that works out the cheapest.
