If they were to say everyone regardless of sex or sexual persuasion will now formally be called Mix, Mox, Mux, Bitch, Butch or whatever, fair enough. The world champion of formal politeness, Japan, for example, has only San (or the familiar Chan) for all sexes/variants/sexless.

But if we're going to have Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms, Mx (not forgetting Sir, Madam, Dr, Dame, Professor, HRH, and all the rest) all co-existing, yes that's truly bonkers.

It would probably be better not to have anything at all. Just call people you don't know by their fucking name.

Aunty BBC (sorry, better say Mx BBC) has a lot to do with with this. Over the past six months it has made the equality agenda its prevailing discourse. I usually have 5 Live on in the car; did a lot of driving yesterday and it was relentless - most of the afternoon was taken up with a discussion about whether its ok for anybody to describe himself as a 'man's man' anymore.

Nothing wrong with a commitment to equality, I would like to say. I don't have any sympathy for the many Harvey Weinsteins of this world getting their comeuppance, or for abusers of any stamp. There are times though, like the current obsession with transgender/intersex issues, where I do wonder about their sense of proportion.

And as I mainly listen to 5 Live for updates on the sport, just want to mention that I will not be watching England v Bosnia live on BBC 2 tonight. And as for the recently concluded Women's Ashes that the Beeb gave blanket coverage to - what 'Ashes' are they then? What got burned? Should anybody be treating a collection of 1 day matches and a single test as the direct equivalent of a historic cricketing contest that is the greatest test series in the world?

If I don't know them, how will I know their name?

Just call everyone Dave or Mohammed, there's a reasonable chance you'll be right.

BBC are a self righteous lot. There are a lot of bad men in the world, murderers , rapists, fraudsters, domestic abusers , bottom pinchers , and men who call women pet and open doors for them. There are also a lot of bad women out there as well, its called life.

But can't help thinking men have increasingly been under the cost these last 5-10 years, to the point were its becoming hysterical and out of order. This morning on the BBC it step fathers under scrutiny. A couple of examples of a step father guilty of domestic abuse and every step father in Britain is a grade A bounder. The world is going mad, it really is.

I'd just like to say that Monty's idea of calling everybody Mox is the way forward. If not, Butch would do nicely. Maybe even Mox Butch and then the family name, makes everybody sound like an important alien (meaning person from space/another world - just in case Twilight is hovering nearby).

I don't mind this at all. It's a small thing which harms nobody - if anything, it's good to see a club fight for equality when your own still racially abuses its players

I'd go further than that. There are times when an obsession with language (even though it's important) is really just a means of an organisation trying to make it look like they're taking the issue seriously, while really changing nothing structurally. While bigotry is often maintained by language, it's causes (and the solutions) are much deeper. My workplace is a classic example; loads of initiatives, but we've got one of the biggest gender pay gaps in the sector, with no real plan to deal with it.

The BBC has its own issues with the gender pay gap, as everybody knows. I also think part of the reason they've become such ardent champions of women's team sports is financial - they can't afford men's team sports, except on a handful of occasions a year, so bigging up the women's games constantly is in their own self-interest.

Even if it's not the biggest step, it's still a step.

Pressing things? Do you mean ironing?

Of course. Parachutes are an utter twat to iron. Don't tell me you never tried extreme ironing.
