In London.

Fooking awful. And it's in danger of collapse now as well.

Already it seems warnings were ignored and potentially some dodge building products used.

Expect a few people to go to jail over this.

Absolutely dreadful
Sounds like the cladding was not flame retardant for it to spread so quickly.
Probably down to greed cutting corners i would not be surprised.
Mind the Fire service would have to have tested the material used for the fire cert to be issued

Indeed, a building of that size should not go up like that surely? Awful, terrifying stuff.

It's pretty hard to set a building on fire. Concrete and steel doesn't burn.
It took a jet airliner's worth of high octane fuel to set the WTC on fire and even then it was limited to a few storeys.
So I'm thinking this one is more than a bit dodgy.

It must be absolutely terrible for the residents.

I seem to recall reading a few years ago now that, due to 'savings', there were only two fire appliances to cover the whole of London that were capable of tackling a fire of this magnitude. Not sure what the current situation is though.

Trying not to pass judgement until it's confirmed what's actually happened but it's like something you'd see in a third world country. No alarms or sprinklers apparently.

I'd hate to think it's down to saving a few bob but if someone's responsible I hope they're left inside a burning building with no escape.

The firm that did the refurb have been on the bbc saying they don't know if the cladding was responsible. Rydon.

Just been on their website and this building is shown proudly as one of their recent projects.

You would have thought someone would have removed that pronto.

Anything burns eventually, I can guarantee that. There's the cladding and the mass of upvc winfows to consider. Wonder what level it started it, did it climb up the building.

Had the radio on from about 4.30 this morning. There were interviews with a few people who escaped from the 4th Floor who said it started on their level as an electrical fire from a fridge. Terrifying that something so small could end up torching an entire tower block.

It does sound as if there'll be hell to pay when all the facts come out, but as Mr. Pooliecrab said, it's very dangerous to jump to conclusions this soon.

Can't believe the chain of events that have led this to happen. Not least all those MPs who recently voted against a bill to make rented homes safe and fit for human habitation. Have a guess which party they were from?

Was one of them the bloke who said sprinklers were undesirable because they would dissuade promoters from building new death traps due to the cost?
I've had quite a bit of experience with sprinkler installation and testing. A fridge fire would have lasted about ten seconds. Provided it's not in the house of a moron who boxes the sprinklers in because they don't go with the curtains.
