God Save The Queen, Relax and then this:

Reached the top spot today and I can't think why radio stations won't play it.

At the time they wouldn't admit it was the biggest selling single but it was so I reckon it counts.

I know plenty of number ones that should have been banned.

For being lousy and cringeworthy, that is.

I saw some list about joke songs that kept very well known 'classics' that you expected made it to No 1 off the top spot. If I remember well shaddap you face kept Vienna by Ultravox from reaching number 1. This example I find quite funny

Clive Dunn's "Grandad" took gag Number Ones to a new level but didn't actually keep anything meritorious from getting to No.1
It did nudge "I Hear you Knockin" off the top but that had already been played to death, and it was still No. 2 for a few weeks after that.
Grandad was eventually replaced by "My Sweet Lord", which can be accused of keeping "Ride a White Swan" off the top.

These must have all been early 1970, as I got my Record Player Xmas 1969 and bought all four singles mentioned!!!

Bad news Mr C.: all those were Nov-Dec 1970. I guess you got your turntable a year later than you thought (or waited a long time before buying any discs!)

Robson & Jerome beat Wonderwall to number one with I Believe/Up on the roof.

Bonkers.

Pet shop boys kept Pogues, Fairytale of New York City off no 1.

Travesty
