Yeah I was a bit shocked when I heard that. He'd be one of the first I'd keep. It's vital that we have players with Conference or National League (or whatever it's called) experience. Not only that, but he was a leading player at that level.

Accountants running the club!
Surprised they don't get rid of all the players, that will cut the wage bill!

This.

He'd be kept and probably be captain if I were doing the list

Nah the keyboard on the club's Atari ST is fucked, can't afford the replacement so news on that is not imminent. That'll be the big September announcement.

Agree with you both, one of the few bright spots at the moment, is that we have 2 players on the books, who have experience of getting out of the National League, Magnay and Amond. Its a no brainer those 2 staying. FFS ! we need a massive rebuild as it is, without losing those we currently have on the books who would be more than half decent at National League level.

Paynter seems to have confirmed on Twitter that he's going. No surprise.

Magnay would be a huge surprise tho. Can only imagine he's one of the higher paid players and we're still in the cost cutting phase

"The Club expects to confirm more details of released and retained players here on the Official Website on Thursday" is quite ambiguous - will it be the full retained list or details about a few more players?

If they're about to announce a new manager, why wouldn't they wait till he was through the door to do the full list? That would at least give the appearance that he'd been consulted.

People assume that the likes of Magnay actually want to stay. Chances are he has turned down the contract offered. He will easily get another League 2 club.

If we retain Richards and allow Magnay to go it's a joke! For the past three seasons I expected Richards to be let go and he is still here. He must be one of our longest serving players now and he still cannot command a regular place.

Only people guaranteed to stay are the well paid hangers-on , head of recruitment, head of finance, head of writing letters to the FA, head of posting on ebay etc.

Got to admit, I'm surprised people think that our better players will actually stay, why would they? Club in turmoil, no investment seemingly coming any time soon and Conference football where you need to amass 100 points to go up?

Carson, Magnay, Amond, Featherstone, Woods, Paynter, Alessandra and Oates are all likely to fuck off in my opinion.

I think the only players we have a chance of keeping of the above are Oates, Featherstone and Woods (yes, I'm aware lots on here would actually like Woods and Featherstone to go anyway).

This is why I think we need someone with contacts in the lower leagues to be appointed manager otherwise we could quite easily do what York have done. Mcnamara was an absolute fucking nightmare for them, took them down twice effectively. Brought in Mills just that bit too late....they had top 10 form after he joined / sorted the squad out. Collins getting the job is sort of ok with me but I would be concerned about his lack of knowledge about the Conference.

I also think the only reason we'll keep the likes of Harrison and Walker is because they want to stay in the North East.

Whoever does get the job is going to have be a fucking genius if we're going to get anywhere near the play-offs in my opinion.

For me this next season will be about finding our feet and sorting the ownership out. If we can sort fan ownership out I'd take mid-table obscurity right now and build to go up in 2-3 seasons with financial backing from the fans and local businesses.

I'd happily pay 20 quid a month or whatever to help the club once we are fan owned.

The only players I would want in our first eleven next season are Carson, Magnay and Amond. On top of that I would keep Harrison , Hawkins and Richardson to warm the bench , and possibly Rodney , based on his display v Donny and his physique + a few of the youngsters like Hawkes, Simpson, Travers waiting in the wings. This would mean we would need to sign around 10-12 players , that would take some doing, for any club, never mind a one in turmoil. That is why I believe only 5 or 6 will be released tomorrow (Cheltenham released 11 and they stayed up ). So with some of the old faces still around next season, I would definitely take a mid table finish now, though I fear it could be worse.

We certainly need 4 players down the spine of the team, who are winners, who have experience of winning titles or promotion in the past, players who have won titles or been promoted from the National League, couple of dominant central defenders, tough tackling midfielder and a 6ft 2+ aggressive/good in the air striker. These type of players will cost , either in transfer fees or wages or both , and therein lies the problem.

I think we should look to get in a Jon Parkin or similar.

We just aren't going to attract anyone capable of getting near a League Two squad because they'll got to the league club all day.

I can't say I'm a massive fan of Jabba Parkin but he does his job. He is a centre forward who scores goals and can do it in the Conference. I'm always surprised at centre fowards who have years of professional football but have a shite goalscoring record - yes there's more to some forwards than scoring goals but they HAVE to have a decent scoring record themselves surely?!

Anyway, I digress.

Parkin just signed a years contract with York, seems settled there, but agree, even at his age, Parkin would of been an improvement on what we currently have or will probably get

The only players who will/possibly be going are the out of contract players or ones who have a years option which the club might not take up ?
You just can't sack players who have a contract ?

They are in a financial hole inherited from Coxall but remember Sage have been involved since Goldberg left - October 16.

The retained list will have started with a spreadsheet of salaries and bonuses. Cut out those we definitely can't afford and go from there. It will undoubtedly have had a financial rather than playing priority.

Its not looking great in terms of retention. The only players most of us would keep will go because we can get some money for them anyway, so a total rebuild is the only way forward. Lord knows what sort of budget Pam will give the new manager as a budget but we can guess it will be minimal even for the National League.

Depressing just about begins to describe it.!!

How a league 2 club losing money daily can warrant having a head of recruitment beggars belief, jobs for the boys of course.
I thought JPNG were recruitment consultants anyway LOL.

how clubs managed with just a manager, a trainer{the one with the bucket and sponge} a reserve team coach and a club secretary is beyond me. but funny it see,ed to work as good if not better than what happens nowadays.

Exactly how much experience does this mysterious head of recruitment have in football and especially the lower leagues? Whole club is an absolute mess from top to bottom. I genuinely can't think of one positive about it apart from maybe a council owned ground! 0 ambition, 0 money, 0 quality and in shit loads of debt and we are now non-league

Totally agree ! shoite badge ,no doubt shoite strip, everything about the club appears to be in meltdown. Thing is this lot of cheapskates , would probably bring in the cheapest re-brander , and so it goes on. That's one thing I will say about Gary Gibson, he had a bit of style, the badge , strip and programme when he was in charge were the best I've seen following Pools.

I have a feeling that our new kit is going to look like a Rugby League kit. Not optimistic about BLK at all for a football kit. However the Canterbury kit for Portsmouth a few years ago was alright so maybe it'll be ok...

So we kept on more or less the same players who played a major part in taking us down.
Cant say im surprised like.
At least Devantee is still on the books for now!

Wait no longer:

Released
Ben Dudzinski
Kieran Green
Rob Jones
James Martin
Jake Orrell
Billy Paynter
Ben Pollock
Jordan Richards
Connor Smith

We would like to thank all of those players listed above for their efforts during their time with Hartlepool United and wish them all the very best for the future.

The Club has offered new contracts to Carl Magnay, Rhys Oates and Brad Walker.

An option on the contract of Devante Rodney has been taken up by the Club.

So it looks like most of the first team were on two year contracts, given only three have been offered new contracts. Also looks like there wasn't actually that much to do to finalise the list...
I expect a few more to move during the summer- For a few grand a league two club might be interested in Featherstone or Woods for instance (just not together!) Still plenty of time for that fire sale.

Featherstone was linked with league clubs in January, hopefully there was some truth in that and they're still interested.
