If you could, or needed to, move elsewhere, what would be your abode of choice?

I have a sneaky feeling my lads are on the way, elsewhere, freeing up me, and the missus, to move away, probably sooner rather than later. Well in about 3 years.

I have heard Cheltenham is quite warm, but its not a region I fancy.

If I moved back to the UK I'd go for somewhere on the Northumberland coast. Maybe Berwick or one of the villages between there and Alnwick. Beautiful area and easy road and rail access to Pools matches. Bit chilly though so I might stay put unless Marine le Nazi deports us.

I am thinking south though, as I have heard its much warmer, and as I approach 50 years of age its a consideration. ****

I can't fault Nottingham. It's in The Trent valley so is quite clement compared to a lot of the midlands.

The whole of the UK is freezing though. Even France is chilly in the winter. Given the Colonel's advanced years and feeble constitution he needs to move to Spain or get a very warm coat and a decent fire. Maybe a poodle for his lap.

I like Durham. Wouldn't mind living there.

The Mrs won't move though as all her family live here. What is it about women n wanting to be on the doorstep of their mothers?

South coast is lovely if you can tolerate seasonal tourists. It's like another country come summer it's that hot. Around the lakes is obviously picturesque if your an outdoors type but I suspect your not. I'd ask tree where the best kebabs are and where he hasn't laid a turd if I were you.

Unless you're loaded actually living in Durham city is near impossible these days - some nice streets of little terraces in the city centre but they've nearly all been bought up for Student Lets.

The University and the Cathedral still own most of the land in the city. Not so much town and gown as gown and gown!

I concur with this, but there again, as young Colonel lives in the castle, I cant complain much. Apart from how much it costs to do so.

He has got with some mates now already looking at renting a house for next year, and a four bedroom street house is going to cost £1600 a month, minimum.

Durham is beautiful in parts, but it's a very strange place to live in. Nothing interesting ever happens, at least nothing apart from weird decisions made by the council, that we all then have to live with. The student lets are a nightmare for many people, and practically nothing has been done to stop their increase, so that in many cases, original Durhamers have no neighbours in vacations, and scores of loud, anti social Hooray Henries living next to them in term-time.

As to the original question, my abode of choice would need to be somewhere near the sea, and also near a city, but would itself be in an isolated hamlet.

Sounds like you described bishop Cuthbert, that village on the outskirts of Hartlepool.

I must admit, my lad is a proper Hooray Henry, and its good that he is following in my footsteps.

I didn't mean to insult your son by seeming to include him in the hooray henry bracket.

But many Durham students have an attitude of that's totally unlike those in neighbouring towns. My daughter worked at the student catering unit at Hatfield College while she did her MA. The way those upper middle twats were allowed to treat the staff you wouldn't believe.

Logically, they all wouldn't hear you or would argue the opposite, ERGO, Win Win for you!!!!!!!!!

Agree 100% about the arrogant student types but I'm not sure I'd agree that nothing interesting ever happens. Lots of people seem to find Lumiere interesting, the Cathedral is very active culturally these days, there's still the Big Meeting and Durham is a decent place for a night out or an afternoon spoaching about. Admittedly the Gala Theatre is a bit of a dead duck and the students contribute nothing of note to the life of the city.

Also, its the county council, so the same weird decisions that apply in Durham city apply in West Auckland, Consett, Chester-le-Street and Seaham. Perhaps that's why they're weird!

Yes but, Malcolm, the Big Meeting and the Lumiere happen only once a year.
And the other things, yes I suppose so, but the city is very small and its venues are samey.

Face up to it.... As soon as you ride into town, house prices will go through the floorboards, locals will flee to the hills and tumbleweeds will blow down the streets, des res to Chernobyl post code in 48 hours.

If you were wanting to move down south the Bournemouth/Poole area is very, very nice. The New Forest is about 10-15 minutes away and is one of my favourite parts of the country

Go there regularly. Wife was born a mile from the new forest.

Some rather unpleasant folk on this thread though.

Keswick followed by Coniston. Great views, walks, and beers! If not then a village in Wensleydale or Swaledale . You can stick your Southern areas up your Jacksie.

Well, relatively. Though I have got the heating on like.

I live in St Ives 12 miles from Cambridge right on the river and love it. Miss seeing the sea and home with family, but it's close to a big lovely city loads of lovely pubs and little villages around. People down here are soft though when it comes to the cold.

Sorry two cities as Ely is round the corner as well but that's in the Fens and weird folk round there.

The thing is, you go to somewhere on a regular basis for brief periods and have good memories of the place, you move there and find living as opposed to visiting a different kettle of fish. It may be perfect but some people may be disappointed, nothing's guaranteed.

Never had a problem parking in Coniston or Keswick and been there summer and winter. If I lived there I would have a property to park on anyway.I understand what you mean about visiting a place and living there but I still enjoy where I live now and have done for over 30 years but would still move tomorrow at the drop of a hat given the right circumstances. Each to their own as they say.

My uncle lived in Keswick for a few years when he worked at Sellafield and hated it. Fine in the summer when it's busy, but the winter months when it pisses down every single day are hard to endure.

He had lived in Berwick for about twenty years previously and moved back there where he is much happier.

I live in Kent near Maidstone and confirm summers are much warmer, nights get darker quickly than 'back home' but there areas with higher population density making traffic movement slower than our paid tax bills! Kent is good for village cricket, 1 hour to London on the train and plenty of excellent historic sites however, air quality is not as good as Blackhall rocks and Crimdon !

I love Snowdonia but I couldn't live there; I need to be close to a big city. If it wasn't for the mother-in-law living there, I could handle living around Amersham. Close to the chilterns, yet only one hour on the met line to London. The people, though, are bloody miserable.

Hate to piss on the parade, but I'm just just happy being me where I am. Things could always be better, depends what you're chasing.

Keswick followed by Coniston. Great views, walks, and beers! If not then a village in Wensleydale or Swaledale . You can stick your Southern areas up your Jacksie.

Consiston....? Try parking there.

Been to Coniston four times this year and every time there was more chance of taking part in an orgy in Buckiingham palace forecourt than getting parked, even driving down to the lakeside. We always drive away arguing from the place.
