Joins Gateshead on loan for a month, still think he could've done a job for us and surprised he hasn't been given much of a chance at Grimsby.

I thought Dan was decent for us and wish him well, but to be honest I wish Pools had let go of a few more of the local lads on the fringes of the first team - it might have given the option of getting a couple more like Donnelly in.

Not naming any names because it's been done before - today for instance!

Whenever we let one go they've got the chance to prove the management wrong - but for every Mark Venus who does exactly that there's dozens and dozens who find their level in non-league.

Good centre back but like all left footed players we have - they always get shoved to left back.

Dan Jones,
Humphreys
Ian Clark
Hartley

I even remember Russell Bradley being shoved to left back for a game or two.

Bates is different class to Dan Jones but this bruised bone injury is dragging on and on. He was worth a new contract on the basis of 35 appearances last season but he needs to get fit soon and stay fit to get anywhere near that this season.

Agree about the other Jones -he's hardly played since he joined the club and his age is definitely against him.

Yeah I can't agree with Yupeb on that one, Bates played very well last season and quite a lot he deserved a new deal.

The sheer mention of Ian Clark brings back many great memories and even more nightmares.

Favourite memory was him scoring a fluky 30 yarder against us, running the whole pitch to celebrate then us score another 3 to absolutely dismantle them.

Once made a website in dedication to him, sadly it's gone now.

The Ginger Ginola.

He'd either beat three men, or trip over the ball. Worth the entry fee alone!

Dan Jones was weak for me.

Passing was terrible.

Had a few decent games but just not good enough in my opinion.

A bit like Fenwick really. I really liked Fenwick's grit and agressive style but again, he just falls short of being good enough to be considered worthy of a wage.

Bates is much, much better than Dan Jones in just about every way. I'd also sooner have the aging Jones instead of Dan too I'm afraid. The aging Jones when he plays is pretty solid. Rarely makes mistakes or loses headers (obviously) which is pretty key to being a decent centre half in League Two

Jones has been out injured, he was warming up when we played Grimsby and you could see he was off the pace and a tad heavy.
