Just been reading the site.
I guess the Heugh battery got used more than most defensive installations - for about 40 minutes in 80-odd years if my observations are correct.
But I guess it was worth it if it saved the town from a much heavier and more lethal bombardment.

at the time we had a massive navy and as usual never expected the un expected the germans dont play cricket
i remember the guns being used for target practice in the fifties but then there was two guns on the other side of the light house [after the event]
as when the bombardment was on one ship came in close to middleton out of range of the guns in the battrey hiding behind the light house causing most of the damage unchallenged

I wasn't impressed with the programme!!!! :-X :-X

No mention of the 1st British Soldier to be killed in action on British soil....not much mention of the amount of casualties sustained by the Bombardment....and not even a glimpse of the Famous painting of the Fisherman escorting the little girl to safety!!!!

:-X :-X :-X

They could have mentioned a helluva' lot more!!!! :-X :-X

I tried to vote but couldn't....our phone is barred from them such phone numbers....ever since our lass caught me phoning Jack Russell v Patterdale Terrier 1 on 1!!!! :uhoh:

But our kid let me use his mobile after he voted!!!! :sweet: :sweet: :sweet:

BTW....I'm really pissed off with the Yakka Mail!!!! :-X :-X :-X

All this week they should have had a big banner on the front page telling the readers to vote!!!! :sweet: ....did they....did they fuck!!!! :-X :-X

Not even a little mention in tonights Yakka Mail....the night when the programme was on TV!!!! :-X :-X :-X

Very dissapointed and angry!!!! :-X :-( :-X :-X
