No, not that one - me and the lass had a run out to Whitby yesterday and discovered they were having a weekend Goth Festival.

Literally hundreds of folk wandering around in Victorian funeral clothes and Steam Punk outfits - with a bit of Mexican Day of the Dead thrown in.

Quite a scene, even if young lovelies were in short supply. In fact, there were almost as many 6 foot tall, middle aged blokes in drag! It's not how I remember Goth gigs from -er - the early 1980s...

All good fun for live and let live types on the Bunker. There's another Whitby Goth festival over Bonfire Night weekend.

Me and a mate from Leeds went to see Echo and the Bunnymen at a one day festival in a field somewhere in South Yorkshire in about 82/83. It was definitely billed as a goth event, and the Bunnymen stuck out like a sore thumb on the line up.

As did we - we were just about the only ones there not dressed head to toe in black and wearing white make-up. No violence like - we just got stared at a lot (and didn't pull).

Went to a few "Goth-esque" gigs in 82-83-84....Southern Death Cult, Bauhaus, The Damned and even The Cure seemed to attract these types around that time.

Our lass always goes to them Whitby Goth days/weekends and tries to drag me along but im having none of it. I ask what they do and she says "walk about"

It doesnt really appeal to me and I bet the takeaway queues are huge.

What else do you do at the English seaside when it's blowing a gale and 7 or 8 C (like yesterday)? If you stand still you die of hypothermia.

You're right about the queues for fish and chips like.

Lived in Leeds 6 for a year in the mid 80s. The area was known as Gotham City. Various members of the Mission and Sisters of Mercy lived there and there was an 'every night is goth night' club called the Phongraphique. A not in any way goth band I liked called The Three Johns were from Leeds and they used to put Dirty Stinking Gothic Rock and Roll across the bottom of posters and flyers because they reckoned using the G word got you an extra 20 or 30 punters in.

There were plenty of takeaways but queues weren't bad. Any goths I knew lived on porridge.

My uncle was in that type of band then which had the worst name know to man Creaming Jesus. He got signed for five albums like and toured loads. I think the lead singer from his hand is now in a punk band called the men that will be blamed for nothing. He like Chip has loads of cracking stories from around that time.
