I see that murderous twat Mandella is getting a statue of him erected in London. Who's next then? Martin McGuiness, Osama Bin Laden? Mandella should have been executed in the sixties and why he is now this big hero figure is way beyond my understanding.

Quote:
[edit] Guerrilla activities
In 1961, Mandela became the leader of the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (translated as Spear of the Nation, also abbreviated as MK), which he co-founded. He co-ordinated a sabotage campaign against military and government targets, and made plans for a possible guerrilla war if sabotage failed to end apartheid. A few decades later, MK did indeed wage a guerrilla war against the regime, especially during the 1980s, in which many civilians were killed. Mandela also raised funds for MK abroad, and arranged for paramilitary training, visiting various African governments.

To be fair though, Mandela had a penchant for putting tires around victims and setting fire to them.

There's such thing as righteous indignation, but Mandela was a sadistic and violent man at his peak. I can't really see why his statue will be beside Churchill and Disraeli either, given he's not English...

...nice enough bloke, but his past is awful

the behaviour of mandela and the rest of his military terrorist group was the catalyst for the state of the full continent today - with europeans controlling the countries all was good - since the european concerns have gradually drfited away over the decades, africa has plummeted into a continent ravaged by the greed of the rebel and the murderous actions of thousands of 'freedom fighters' - i cannot think of one nation ( i cant be arsed either mind) that has not had some form of civil war, epidemic, drought, devastation or whatever not aided by the greed and bastadness of the inhabitants.

Joe Stalin is a legend in some quarters, the only thing I can't work out about Mandela is why they let him out rather than executing him to shut up all the whinging lefties.

If you were black, and you lived in South Africa, you would have followed him like he were a living legend; and he was to them.
But you werent. You were born white in England.
Its all a matter of randomness...

Fair point Katcha and one I cant and dont want to argue with. Having said that I really dont care either way if there's a statue of him in this country or not.

If we had to have a statue od Nelson Mandela or Tony Blair I know who'd I prefer. I think the status of Mandela is about how he managed the reconcilliation process - not how he fought the racist forces in South Africa.

We've had a Nelson Mandela Park, in Leicester, for as long as I've been here. Mind it's next to the Prison, not sure if that was intentional confised

Mind he did have 26 years to put his manifesto together.

The bigger anachronism is giving Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness a say in Northern Ireland. They make Nelsons activities with the aforementioned 'necklaces' look like a game of tiggy.
