Actor Frank kelly has died age 77. He made me laugh and cringe at the same time.

Father Jack was one of the simplest yet funniest characters. He'll be remembered for that role and that's not a bad thing in my mind.

A life lost is always sad. However Father Ted is in the same league as Mrs Browns Boys. Colloquial and absolutely shite !

Can't agree. There was some good writing in Father Ted. It worked more often than not.

Mrs Brown's Boys is indeed fuck awful though.

Agreed. Father Ted was one of those comedies that was so daft but yet so clever at the same time. Great writing and great characters.

RIP

Please don't mention those two programmes in the same breath. Mrs Brown is a very clever character but one dimensional. Father Ted had loads of clever characters who worked in several different dimensions at once.

In twenty years time Father Ted will still be revered whereas a lot of people will have forgotten about Mrs Brown.

'Colloquial'....? What's wrong with it being colloquial. .....?

Can't really explain why I thought it was so hilarious...something to do with 3 of the characters being so off-the-wall while Father Ted treated them as if they all were perfectly normal.

Some of the episodes had me with tears rolling down my face and still make me smirk a bit whenever I remember them. Mrs Doyle choosing to descend from her window-cleaning by simply falling off the window-sill...Mrs Doyle being so determined to pay the tea-shop bill that she and her friend end up slugging it out on the café floor and have to be arrested....'No Clues'....the football match etc etc

Not just the four main characters - all the other priests were comedy gold.

Father Romeo Sensini - the ringer from Vatican FC, unlucky Father Duff, Father Finnegan, the dancing priest - even Graham Norton was funny as Father Furlong.

The episode with the priests 'trapped' in a store's bra department is funnier in 5 minutes than every half-decent joke in Mrs BB laid end to end.
