Hello all,

Can you help? I am an Exeter City fan and matchday volunteer at St James Park. One of our old pros Selwyn Rice has been trying to contact his old mate Alan Goad for a number of years, and not got very far. As he is not very techie I am trying to help him out. As you all know Alan started out down with us, and I think the two of them kept in touch whilst Selwyn was at Wimbledon and Alan with yourselves, the last thing that Selwyn knew was that Alan had a pub, The Mason Arms in Spennymoor, but I think this was 30 years ago. I have found an old thread online involving Alans son Paul but could see any thing that might help there. is anyone in touch with Alan, or know anything that would help.

Thanks
Kier

I know a few old blokes who drink in Spennymoor. I'll ask if they know anything.

I believe he is/was in Toronto, Canada. His son came on one of the iterations of this board (or its predecessor) some time ago and told us about their life in Canada.

Thank you all very much for helping. The thread that mentions his son Paul leads to a us web site, I thought it wasn't right but that could be them.

Pools' back four of Potter Dawes Green Goad in season 72/73 was one of the best - not in terms of skill but they were all proper defenders (hard buggers). We didn't concede many goals but unfortunately scored even less!

Wrong way round. It was Watling (1), Potter (2), Goad (3), Dawes (4), Green (5). This was in the days when the numbers were relevant as opposed to now when the goalkeeper can have 27 on his back.

Well, yes and no. I shouldn't have omitted Barry Watling from that hard-to-score-against defence, but when i used to write out the side I'd have picked if I was manager (something I was keener on as a 20 year old than I am now) , I always worked stage right to left, e.g.

Watling

Potter Dawes Green Goad

Honour, Smith, Spelman

Waddell, Conlon, Warnock

Though maybe that particular 11 never started a match!

I seem to remember two Smiths in that era - Bobby and Rob? I was a kid so could be wrong.

Also, isn't that the same thing?

(1)Watling
(2) Potter (4) Dawes (5) Green (3)Goad

No, it's 1, 2,4,5,3 not 1, 2,3,4,5 as you had before. :-)

You're right about the two Smiths - I had big Bobby in mind.

Aye but now you're talking about formations where I was listing them numerically. In terms of weight the formation was:

5, 4, 3,2,1. Whereas in height it was 5,4,2,3,1. So there!

Cheers MJ - Amazing archive, amazing knowledge as ever.

For some strange reason I am struggling to remember/vizualise Rob Smith, and I had a season ticket for 72/73.

It was so bad I didn't get another one for 30 year. 17 goals in 23 home matches. Jeez, last season was a goal fest in comparison!

Was 2nd replay at neutral ground, we must of won the toss. Sunderland skinheads chased the poolies out of the Fulwell End that night legend has it

We lost 2-1 third replay that season we had some much hope after the great re-election escape unde Len Ashurst but the front runner of a certain Johnny Johnny Johnny Coyne was top scorer I think with 9. The big disappointment was Waddell got injured that season.

Wattling potter goad Dawes Green just tripped off the tongue no big squad 14 plays injured or not tony toms made sure you played

Rob Smith as big as david foley with long side burns I recall! combative but not much skill.

I was at the Roker Park game. Rob Smith had a Ginger-ish shaggy hairdo and was relatively small. Bobby was tall and had freckles! We were down at the front of the Clock Stand paddock, Scunthorpe had a player called Steve Deere who had a fight with John Coyne after wrestling for the ball at a throw-in about two feet from us. Pools played in borrowed Ipswich Shirts (with their badges) as it was the week after the fire at The Vic.

I was also there and I am sure we had a certain winger called warlock. Correct me if I'm wrong, grey matter is not what it used to be
