.....pretty poor game, lit up by a cracking goal from Fenwick. The keeper, while he didn't have a great deal to do, fills me with confidence - looks like he should be our number ! even when Carson's fit. Thought Woods should have come off ten minutes earlier, and Paynter looked like he's tweaked his groin. Encouraging cameo from Oates, saw Magnay make his first two mistakes of the season, Duckworth looked excellent, as did Harrison. Bit of work for Ronnie to do to liven us up for Saturday.

I feel sorry for the time we play when we play well. They are going to get a battering! We had some good spells and thought Newport played some tidy football as well.

I thought duckworth and Harrison both struggled first half like. I didn't think we played well but if we win in such circumstances then it's looking good! I don't think Newport are mugs but they just didn't have the final ball game in them. Bingham is immense. Possibly one of the best free signings we have made. Exciting times ahead.

Ps I'm surprised I've not heard more people praising Carroll after tonight. He did well.

Eh. Duckworth was ropey to say the least. Featherstone was immense and Newport were no mugs. Ref played a blinder playing the advantage for our goal.

Duckworth made a lot of mistakes that first half and I lost track of how many times he gave the ball away. Ronnie could clearly see it too judging by his reactions. Magnay wasn't as good as he usually is either. Both great players on their day but like most of our team they had an off day tonight. As long as we win then all is well.

I thought Bingham probably had the worst game I've seen him have tonight, nothing stuck with and not much came off for him. He was especially poor first half. Improved second half and still nearly scored a beauty.

Carroll has speed but I'm struggling to see anything else from the lad.

Carrol defends well but needs to have the confidence to take players on up the wing instead of doing hit n hope balls from the halfway line which rarely find our forwards.
Hopefully Ronnie n Sam will pick up on this otherwise a natural winger may be required when the loan window opens next month.

Hope not or else we'll have to wait until January for our next points.

I thought they were all a bit subdued, to a man, Newport included. Just a really odd game. No one seemed to want to win it. Whilst Newport had a decent amount of possession they weren't exactly threatening. What is really encouraging though is we've performed pretty average/below par and still done enough to win.

Ronnie's comments today focus on no-one getting carried away despite the winning start.

Pools will get a proper test of how good they are in relation to the rest of the division next month when they play Wycombe and Exeter away then Cambridge at home - 5 or 6 points from that run of games and we'll be entitled to think it's gonna be a great season.

I don't think we could of hand picked a better 4 or 5 games at the start of the season if we tried. We haven't played great yet so hopefully we are saving our best for the tougher games. Last year we lost both times to York and picked up two points against Newport so were already well up on last years points total if we take it team by team. Anything at Stevenage will be a bonus as they did the double over us last year as well. Our next 7 aways are all 200 plus mile journeys it will certainly sort the men from the boys. Throw in a few tougher home games and we may be thankful for the start we have had.

When Binghams finishing improves which it will - we will genuinely have one of the hottest prospects in the lower leagues. The good times are back at the vic.....

Mansfield are barmy for letting him go. 21 years old, lighting fast and good with the ball at his feet. Team player and has goals in him.

Obviously loves being at Pools though, maybe Mansfield isn't so good...

Credit to Newport who showed no inclination for theatricals or dirty play. How refreshing that was to see from an away team at Pools. Apart from the very obvious shirt pull on Paynter, it was a pretty clean game, & one in which ref (who was efficient) had little need to intervene

Agreed - they never whinged or contested decisions, made ridiculous appeals, tried to get players booked, surounded the ref, didnt react to any fouls or anything. Neither did their bench. Refreshing to see but I cant help but feel it could be to their detriment.

Nice guys always finish last.

Reminds me of a comment by some commentator whose name escapes me...." he always played by the rules , but sadly always lost by them"
