Reserves Go Down 5-0

In an end to end game City's reserves came out second best against a well organised and experienced Hartlepool United side.

Despite numerous chances City's second string couldnt find the back of the net in what was a very entertaining match, against an experienced Hartlepool side.

Report to follow.

Subs: Luke Baxter, Jamie McCormack, Mark Pembleton, Gary King, Lennell John-Lewis

United: Jim Provett, Carl Jones, John Brackstone, Richard Langthorne, Mark Tinkler, Darrell Clarke, David Foley, Lee Bullock, Michael Mackay, Joel Porter, Matty Robson

Reserves Go Down 5-0

In an end to end game City's reserves came out second best against a well organised and experienced Hartlepool United side.

It could have been a different score line if the Imps had been able to find the back of the net, with Pools goalkeeper Jim Provett being called into action on a number of occasions.

Report by James Lazenby at Sincil Bank Stadium

It was the Imps who started the liveliest of the two sides when after four minutes Ryan Semple played a neat one-two with Ollie Ryan down the right hand side. The midfielder's cross was met by the head of Dany N'Guessan, but the Frenchman, from six yards, couldn't keep his header down and the ball flew over the cross bar.

Just a minute later and it was again good work from Ryan who, on the half way line, played a long range pass to Semple who was sprinting down the wing. Semple, in the corner, took on two players and shot just wide on the edge of the box.

Robert Olejnik was called into action in the nineth minute when right winger David Foley cut inside and fired a goalbound shot, only to see his effort pushed away by City's 'keeper for a corner.

Five minutes later and FOLEY broke the deadlock after some patient build up play from the opposition. The ball was played into the box and striker Michael Mackay was quickest to react and laid the ball into the path of Foley who calmly side footed it into the back of the net from six yards.

Despite going down 1-0 the Imps kept the pressure on the Hartlepool defence and came inches away from a goal in the 17th minute. Good play down the left handside from Owain Warlow and N'Guessan resulted in the ball being played back to Andy Toyne on the edge of the box. His powerful low strike beat the Pools 'keeper, but the ball struck the post.

Hartlepool's Foley was causing City some problems in defence and the winger came close on several occasions.

Thirty-six minutes and the visiting side made it 2-0 after some poor defending from the Imps. Again, after some patient build up play around the edge of the box Darrell Clarke crossed to the far post for the unmarked JOEL PORTER to head from just a couple of yards.

The Imps didn't give up and Warlow had a great chance to get City back into the game. N'Guessan held the ball up well and played a decent ball into the feet of the Welsh winger, but he could only shoot straight at the 'keeper from ten yards.

One minute before the interval and the Imps found themselves 3-0 down. Paul Morgan failed to clear a long ball from left back John Brackstone, and MICHAEL MACKAY quickly dispossessed the centre back and cooly placed the ball past the oncoming Olejnik.

Into the second half and the Imps seemed to up their tempo and Semple should have clawed one back just five minutes into the half, but his right foot curler from the edge of the box skimmed the post.

N'Guessan, Ryan and Warlow all came close and would have scored on another day but for the acrobatics of Hartlepool goalkeeper Provett.

The visitors made it 4-0 in the 67th minute when Olejnik could only push away a Mackay shot into the path of substitute MICHAEL RAE on the edge of the six yard area.

Ryan Semple came close again with a similar shot that curled past the post. And at the other end Rae almost added to his goal with a long range effort, which was superbly tipped over by Olejnik.

With just a couple of minutes on the clock striker MICHAEL RAE headed in his second of the match and made it 5-0 to the Pools.

In the dying moments it came as no surprise that Ollie Ryan, whose shot was heading into the back of the net, was denied by Provett for the unteenth time.

Full time Imps 0 - 5 Pools.
