...so some kids don't get to go on an end of term school outing as it's over subscribed, there's a wailing and gnashing of teeth mainly from parents who think their kids have been hard done too banghead

It's not as if the school didn't forewarn them that not all of the kids would be able to go, and there's a strict ratio of teachers to kids dictating numbers. FFS kids are so mollycoddled by greedy parents these days, let them experience that rejection is a part of life, it happens in all walks, get used to it. stpid

When I was a lad we had to swim across a canal full of starving alligators to get to school and the headmaster burnt our eyes out with a red hot poker if we were late.

Totally agree...saw the report on TV, it could have been organised better, if you can't take all the kids, try organising one where you can.

Be hard to make a strong educational case for a trip to Disneyland even if they were all going.

Just to get this straight, was it a free trip to Disneyland?

Dont see the fuss.

Same happened at Jesy Road, trip to London, 30 spaces. Drawn out a hat to see who could go. I expected to get picked since I was the brightest in the school but to no avail.

I dont remember my parents crying to the paper.

Everything at my lad's school is oversubscribed. All the trips, after school clubs, the lot. I can't see what the fuss is about.

It's a total non story.

It's not as if it's these kids are the only ones in the year not going they just missed out of the ones who paid the deposit. It was over subscribed, other than cancel the trip for everyone what are the school meant to do!?

Yes because I'm sure every kids parents in the year could afford to send the kid, just like that!!

The only way the school can't be 'bang out of order' by this logic is either a) organise no trips at all b) make them free, which I doubt would get them to Disney Land!

As Tree said it happened when I was at school, think I missed out on one trip to Edinburgh but got to go to London. That's life! Kids are meant to learn stuff at school, surely that's an important lesson.

The parents going to the newspapers embarrassing.

It was the same at our school when i was a lad, i think i missed out on a trip to see england under 21's at the riverside due to names being drawn out of the hat.

Everyone has an equal chance, it's the fairest way.

Some parents need to get over themselves.

I think when we did it, we picked the names out the hat who WERE going, queue shouts of "yessssssss" etc etc and an element of excitement. Better than doing it by simply picking the 6 who cant go imo.

As PJ says the only viable alternative is no fucker going on school trips to certain places. Id rather some people had the trip than none at all.

I went on school trips where everyone went as did my kids, I don't recall ever having any of them involving draws to see who can go. Try organising it to match the kids wanting to go..... and before anyone pulls me up on it I've been on plenty of trips with school partys and never encountered it before.
How about booking the holiday to suit the number of kids and not the number of kids to suit the holiday.

When I was in school names were drawn out of a hat to go to Carlton Camp.
Me and loads of others didn't get to go to Carlton Camp but we got to go to Osmotherly for a day or 2 less.
Maybe the school in question could have applied the same logic and sent the kids who didn't get to go to Disneyland to Alton Towers?! bbolt

Happened to my class back in Teresa's . 25 or so places to go to the Millennium Dome, names picked out of a hat to go (I was chosen) No issues, no stories... end of.

To be honest, I did miss the trip to the Lake District when I was nine, but at least me and Col were banned for fighting and being 'disrespectful'.
Just a thought, how come the teachers are iever oversubscribed.

There will be plenty of trips where the company/boards etc allocate each school a number of seats (examples in this thread possibly being the dome and an England u21 game). I doubt they can say to each school 'just bring all 500kids' etc. or maybe the school should just say 'either take them all or fuck off'? It seems some people would prefer that option.

The problem is that they are undersubscribed. It's usually a lot of work now as they're effectively working all the time and you get few volunteers. I know a teacher who organises the same trip every year; she puts in loads of hours before and during the trip, gets no credit from the school and struggles to get colleagues to help. Come on, would you enjoy being responsible for so many kids 24/7?

I'm looking at it through the eyes of a ten year old, which seems to have been lost in this....and if people can't see that then there's no point.

Plenty of us on this thread got turned down at 10 year old etc and saw no problem. We certainly never got our parents to cry to the local papers like this pack of attention seeking rarfs.

My lad is younger. It's a simple case of limited resources. That's a fact of life that's ubiquitous. If you can't see that, then there's no point.

You all sound like a lot of grumpy old men...." pull yourself together son grow up, lifes like that, get used to it, it's a hard world out there.... when I was your age we had to.... " etc, etc ad nauseum, that's the real point.
Great advice when you're 16, shit when your 10.

I'm not gonna change my opinion so I'll leave it at that.

I was at that game, was England schoolboys vs Brazil schoolboys. I still have the programme somewhere, Ben Clark, Jermaine Defoe, Jay Bothroyd and Stuart Parnaby played.

Best game I've ever been to, wouldn't dare not have been there.

I don't see how these families have a leg to stand on. If they disagreed with kids being left out, they should have said so at the start. What they effectively mean is that they didn't mind kids being left behind as long as it wasn't their own.

If they thought that it might be over subscribed then maybe they should've put the price up higher to keep the numbers down?

Schools are not profit making companies; they cannot do that.

Family finances precluded my going on any visit at school. In fact I never even asked my mother if I could go because I didn't want her to feel bad about it. Was I jealous? You bet the fuck I was. Did I get over it? Faster than you can imagine.
Do I feel sorry for these kids who couldn't go? I do, but they are probably 10,000th on my feel-sorry-for list. And if they feel sorry for themselves, then make that 10 millionth.
