Surely this article is taking the Piss?

http://m.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/sport/foo ... -1-7246789

If a draw against a shit team in a meaningless match qualifies as one of the greatest ever moments, then it's surely time to pack in?

I think a lot of fans still have an erection due to the great escape.

Once they lose that they might just start to question the bigger picture. But I wont hold my breath.

'Even better than Cardiff', obviously took the Bob Marley theme too literally.

To be fair to the lad I don't think he said personally it was better than Cardiff

"Even better than Cardiff, many mused afterwards"

Maybe he really meant it was the bestest dressie up day ever, as Cardiff (pre FDE) was a relatively low key fancy dress affair with football colours being the choice for most.

He couldn't have been at Cardiff or old enough to remember it. I wasn't at Carlisle, but the support from all the traveling fans looked great. Although it's amazing how 200 or 300 of the fancy dress elite is turned into 2000! I know my maths is sh*te but I scratch my head at that one.

Cardiff is tainted due to that yes, but I can think of at least 20 matches from that era way better than the Carlisle match suggested in the article.

It won't of even been better than the night we beat Bournemouth 3-2 after being 2-1 down.. Boydie missing a pen on 90 minutes before Appleby got the winner.. Oh and Boydies 3-0 demolition of Sheff Wed .. Some people have short memories ( or are too young to remember)

The 3-0 at Darlo is probably the best for me. Don't know why but Sweeney getting a last minute equalizer against Leeds at home to make it 2-2 stands out for me as well.

The 3-0 at Darlo was one of my favorites.
Also the 8-1 against Grimsby and the 3-0 against Sheff Wed were good ones too.

I get what people say about Cardiff being their best game but for me I just have to think of the score and it soon falls down my list.

Christ even the 2-0 defeat in the 2nd leg of the playoffs against Tranmere ranks higher

Honestly if anyone thinks a meaningless end of season "friendly ranks anywhere at all, then we should all just pack in.

Off the top of my head:

Cardiff
Both games against Tranmere
The last game at Bournemouth, before tranmere.
Stoke in the cup
Ipswich away in the cup, Rob McKinnons last match
Grimsby 8-1
Darlow 3-0 away
The Joe Allon darlow away game.
Leeds 2-2
Sheff Wed 3-0
Leeds at home in the cup 2-6
Crystal Palace in the cup 2-1
The Luton match Hugh Robertsons thunderbolt
The game where Hugn robertson had about 10 free kicks, where he scored a couple and hit the bar three times.
The Rotherham away game after M Scott had gone......the Ben Clark Rocky game.
Even the defeat at Rochdale when we had half the team sent off.
Any league game that mattered.
Quite a few friendlies that didnt.

Remember that friendly against aberdeen i think it was years ago where they just started walking on the pitch? About 6/7 boys wanting to go toe to toe?

I think we drew 3-3, strodder scored an overhead.

The 2-1 win (Boyd 2 pens) over Oldham on Boxing Day, 2004.
Shite game like, but it was the last time I saw Pools win.

That 6-4 Wrexham game was mental.

Another game at Peterborough when we won 5-3, that was during the couple of weeks that Jon Daly couldn't stop scoring. We were 4-0 up only to concede 3 then Matty Robson sealed it near the end.

It was also Phil Crossleys first game reffing us since the play off final and he got 'The referees a wanker' chant as soon as he blew for kick off

Think we beat Aberdeen 4-3 or 4-2.

Darlo away, by their admission their best ever side and we decimated them in their own back yard.

Dibble mentioned the best ones.. but

Pools winning at Hull's Boothferry Park (courtesy of a wonderful Jamie Coppinger goal), sneaking in the playoffs then getting stuff chucked at us and being looked at sternly after the game was a lot more memorable that the Carlisle game.

Loads of memorable games.

0-0 against Colchester in the 80s because it was my first pools match and everyone changed ends at half time.

Cardiff because it's the best day out I've had as a football fan.

Swansea 7-1
Grimsby 8-1
Coming back from 3-0 down to draw at Stockport
Beating Stoke
Beating Crystal Palace
Boyd beating Wednesday
3-0 at Darlo
A non descript 1-0 win at Wycombe that saw us promoted

All great memories along with many others, even though we lost a lot of the others.

Loads of very memorable games mentioned on this thread, but for those that were at Carlisle last week i think most would agree that, atmosphere wise, it really was one of the best. It's certainly one of my best experiences, up there with Cardiff, better than Sunderland, easily on a par with darLOW at the white elephant, close to the 1991 clincher against Northampton, i've had some great memories of atmospheric Pools matches since 1972 but i think the unity of the fans, all so close together, chanting as one, has to be one of the best off the pitch and will live long in my memory.
The match itself was a bit rubbish in the first half and pretty good in the second, but for me and many others, i think the memories will be more about the fans that day.

The 4-3 Luton game including that goal from Hugh.

Coopers first game at Peterborough coming back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 with a 35 yarder from Micky Nelson

Winning 2-0 at Rushden with Boydy handing out some Karma to the odious Billy Turley

8-1 Grimsby

The atmosphere against Bristol City in both legs

All better than last Saturday from one single season!

It was a very enjoyable day last week though an entertaining game and we had brilliant support.

Our support is brilliant.
We deserve a lot better than year on year relegation battles.

I stated a few months ago If we stay up and get new owners in it would be a brilliant DOUBLE.

Well we halfway there!

Exeter away 2-0 to sneak into the play-offs. First game I took our lass to. She thought they would all be as exciting as that.

Some really good memories from the games mentioned, the Grimsby 8 - 1 game featured the best own goal I think I've ever seen, bullet header! The one that sticks in my mind is the game against Barnet when Tony Cottee was their manager and rested himself for the game as they were pushing for promotion and were playing some one better a few days later. Stevo waltzed through them after 3 minutes from the half way line to score, Midgley got a hat trick and we won 6 - 1, absolutely destroyed them. Think he was sacked later that season.

They went out of the League that season we finished 4th yet he thought the game was beneath him (or he didn't fancy it!) Midgleys hat trick was all headers as well. We won 3-1 down at Underhill as well with Sam Shilton scoring a cracker.

I was asked to work night shift overtime the night of the Grimsby match, when i refused and gave my reason a few of the lads assured me I'd be wasting my time.

I don't think I could have looked any more smug as I walked past them all on the way into work on the Saturday morning, I might have even mentioned the result to a few of them.

There's been better games and bigger occasions. Some of those mentioned were and many weren't, but Carlisle was a huge relief, great laugh, good fun and celebration of not being what was nearly the worst result in Pools history i.e.: relegation out of the league.

The greatest game in the clubs history - probably not.... but very nearly the worst! So it was definitely worth celebrating as a great day.

If you weren't there then sorry. Great days at Pools are few and far between. It was a great day.

Pools are the greatest team to support in the world because of the fans and the days like these.

I agree with that, I think it was so enjoyable because for so long it was a game everyone was feeling physically sick at the prospect of. In the end it was just laugh and a fun day out.
