Very sad, it used to be my local for many years in the 70,s. Roger Smith on the piano, Harp lager served in dimpled glasses with a handle. Tartan ale.

Another great pub bites the dust. :(

It is very sad; me and my missus also used to go in during the seventies. We loved the place especially at Christmas in the Logger Room. The then gaffer Billy Taylor always sang a carol after much encouragement from all the punters/ regulars; we'd raise the roof when he'd finished!

The Woody 'bit the dust' literally... it was all over the place.
The place was never the same when it was knocked into one big barn.

Another part of my past gone. Used to practically live there in the 80s. Always at Alex's quiz on a Monday night and Rob's quiz on a Sunday afternoon.

appreciate that lads who grew up in hartlepool will have significant memories of the place, but i thought it was a shithole. my ex-wife's uncles used to virtually live in there, but every time i went in i couldn't wait to get out.

Nothing wrong with shitholes and dives. Personally I like my pubs to be a little down-at-heel, a little lived in. A world full of places like Tall Ships, Merry Go Round, Stag & Monkey, White House would be depressing as fook to me. They're shitholes too in their own way.

The Woodcutter was a great pub, played some of our best gigs in there to great audiences.

I dont like these posh boozers give me the so called dives anytime where everyones on the same level.
Last time i was in the woodcutter for a pool match the game got suspended for ten minutes because there was a load o women knocking fuck out of each other one of them was throwing punches like Mike Tyson.A good bit of entertainment!

To be fair, "reeking of nicotine" was probably a step up for you.

The only things I look for in a pub are that it sells proper beer, doesn't play shite music and isn't full of chewy twats. Apart from that I'm happy really.

I've been down the town about three times in the last five years, and I felt quite old. I'll stop in the Causeway all night given the choice.

Pub's are all about good company and a decent pint.
The rest is pretty much incidental.

Out of all the pubs that have gone, the closure of The Lion saddened me the most.

I'm confused because of all the different Lions I know. Would that have been in Lancaster Road? There used to be a Santa Claus thing there for dock workers' kids like myself every Christmas.

I had some good nights in there, most of my mates lived round Oxford road, Kingsley avenue way. When I was 17 I played cricket for the woodcutter. Won a cup final one weekday night, think it was a Thursday, and ended up getting twatted on Pernod. Had a bloody good laugh in there, something which sadly wouldn't happen in the whitey or tall ships

hilarious.

i can't possibly speak for it's full lifespan, but the few occasions i crossed its threshold, it seemed exactly like the sort of shithole you would love. and your family would rejoice at every hour you spent in there while they could breathe fresh air at home.

Sorry to disappoint you, but you've probably been in the place more times than me, but the times I did, I never looked down on anyone....and your perfect pub is...?... this should be interesting.

Those establishments have as much in common with a pub as Marc Almond has with a cage fighter "poseurs paradises"

Both pubs have a clientele that's a tribute to the embalmers art, with the atmosphere of a retired perfume counter advisors bragfest.

Haunt for about four years late 80s . Played cricket for them too, won the league. Was decent place, some good regulars .

you're a beaut you like. where did i say i looked down on anyone ? just thought the pub was a shithole. and for the record my two favourite pubs in the town are the Smallcrafts club and the Stag and Monkey, both because I've run football teams that those boozers sponsored and spent most of my time in them. NEXT ?

Isn't the stag and monkey a restaurant not a pub?

It may have finished up as one, but that was after my time, I only have good memories

I'll give you the Smallcrafts NEXT ?
best get home to the family, all that fresh air they're breathing in my absence could be a shock to their system

Yes- Spent many an afternoon between 1 and 250pm listening to tees sport in the car while my dad and uncle had their pre match pints. A bag of nuts or crisps usually arrived around 1.45pm. Then one day in 1980 at the age of 15 they asked me if I would like to come in with them, and have a Shandy. Gerrin!! The rest is history!!
