Why do people tie knots in johnnybags?

I've always wondered this since finding them on the rec as a kid.

If you're just going to hoy it after you've just done the deed, why go to the trouble of knotting it? It's not like gentlemen's relish can jump into any nearby unguarded minges of its own accord.

Even better still if you can obtain a copy of 'The Observers Book of Discarded Condoms' and have it adjacent to the cabinet.
