Released by Donny Rovers - the owners withdrew an offer of a 3 year contract to save money.

Liked him in his loan spells with Pools and he's been excellent for Doncaster. Hope he's on CC's radar (but then who isn't?).

This from the Doncaster evening paper:
"James Coppinger says his ten-year love affair with Doncaster Rovers is over.

The 33-year-old - Doncaster’s longest serving player - is looking for a new club after learning that Rovers are not in a position to offer him a new deal.

Coppinger, who last season became only the fourth player in the club’s history to clock up 400 appearances, had verbally agreed a three-year contract to see out the remainder of his career at Rovers earlier this summer - but that deal was subject to John Ryan and Louis Tomlinson’s takeover going through.

Coppinger joined Rovers from Exeter in 2004, his wing wizardry firmly establishing him as a fans’ favourite and a key man in the club’s rise to the Championship under Sean O’Driscoll and then again in 2013.

Coppinger said: “I’m no longer at Doncaster Rovers. Without doubt I’ve played my last game for the club - not through my decision.

“They [the owners] have made their decision and I respect that.

“I’ve not received an offer from them and I’m looking forward to a new challenge.

“I can totally understand what’s happened with the takeover and the chairman [John Ryan] and the owners.

“They want to go down a different route.

“They don’t want to spend the money on the players and I respect that decision.

“At the end of the day I’ve had a fantastic career at Doncaster,” he added.

“The last couple of days have been very emotional for me and my family.

“It’s felt slightly surreal to be honest - this is the first time I’ve been a free agent since I was a YT.

“But I’ve got to look forward now. I cannot wait to get a new club now, I’ve still got a lot to offer.”

He played over 40 games in the Championship last season I think he's going to get better offers than Pools unfortunately.

He'd be a great little player for us, but I don't think we'd have a chance of getting him as the top end league 1 and bottom end champ clubs will nip in for the little nipper.

Agree...Barnsley/Sheff Wed/United/Rotherham...all in South Yorkshire where he currently based then Leeds/Huddersfield/Bradford C and even throw the Boro in and there's a lot clubs closer to him at this moment in time.

A great phrase, sadly seldom seen nowadays. Just don't tell Dibble.

It seems an age since he first played at Vic Park. Was in Brian Honours testimonial game, 1995 or 96 I reckon. Think he scored a couple as well, must of only been 16 or 17

Copping first arrived in the 99/00 season n he was a bit average upfront.

The next loan spell he played on the wing and along with Paul smith are 2 of the best wingers I've seen at pools, we played some absolute class football that year.

It was 1995, and he was 14. Unsurprisingly he didn't play in that one!

Team: Harper, Hottiger, Elliott, Barton, Peacock, Howey, R Appleby, Kitson, Ferdinand, Allen, Sellars
Subs: Keen, Elliott, Thornton, Brayson, Beardsley, M Appleby

Scorers: Allen 22, 45, Kitson 57, Brayson 70

Not often I get em wrong, funnily enough I have often thought of this one and could never marry the gap between this game and the age of Coppinger. Makes sense now, getting him mixed up with Brayson. I thought it was Coppinger who was the young wonder kid at the time.

that was in the days of Garry Gibson as chairman, in fact it might have been the season we got relegated with about 37/38 points. Can't remember the skunk player like

I had a dream that we signed coppinger last night. For some strange reason he had dyed his hair red and black stripes though. ?!

I've been having dreams where people have weird hair dye combinations.

I blame speed cameras.

him who played for Pools (not very well) about 10 years earlier? Pools fans nicknamed him "Yosser" for his playing style?

Keegan was livid about it. More or less saying "we play these little teams out of the goodness of our hearts and this is what they do". And implying it might be the last time they played the likes of us pre season.

So if a Billingham player had injured Luke James with a rash tackle you think Cooper would just say ah well one of those silly things that happen

He did quite badly break his leg though I think so he was probably justifiably miffed, and McGuckin was a right dirty get!

Mcguckin wasn't dirty just slow in the tackle, god knows what Fulham saw in him, did'nt play much so guess they soon realised had made a mistake. Gucky lived off it though for a few years. I know he told me.

Mcguckin was dirty

It was around the time of that Newcastle game he re-invented himself as a hard man, I think someone got hold of him and told him if he wanted to make a living in the game he would need to get tough, and to be fair to him he did make the most of himself and have a decent career

Yes he was slow is his too footed lunge that smashed someone's leg in half in a pre season friendly.

Not dirty though.

Coppinger signed another two year deal with Doncaster yesterday.

Ah well, he'll 'only' be 35 in 2016...
