Massive ex-Stockport striker who loved a goal against us on BBC One just then, his daughter plays netball for England news which I have come home to and am shocked by.

I remember seeing footage of him running alongside Brian Honour, which looks like an optical illusion. I've still got it on VHS somewhere, I think it was on 'The Back Page' when we played at Stockport.

Just checked on MadJohn's fine website he scored 10 goals in 11 games against Pools including two hat tricks! How tall was he? I was a kid in those days so my guess would be 7' 10"

Without looking at Madjohn's site I reckon that record must rival Steve Howard's against Pools.

Think he was about 6'7 which was tall in them days, not so much now.

Would be interesting to know who has scored the most goals against us.

Remember him marking Lenny Johnrose when Lenny beat him to flick on a corner at the near post for us to score. Could never work out how Len managed it.

Francis had limitations. The Stockport system of that couple of season was second only to John Becks Cambridge at the time horrible/physical long ball to Francis or Dublin. We cut out the supply to Francis when we beat them 3-1 at Edgerley Park on Good Friday 1991, a great result indeed

Wasn't it Francis who reckoned he was getting racist abuse here?

In the modern era it's Lormor, Howard and Francis with ten each. Since we joined the League in 1921 the top scorers have been Ernie Dixon and Bert Swindells (both scored 14 in the 20s/30s). If you count league goals only, only eight men have double figures:

14 - Ernie Dixon (20 games)
13 - Colin Garwood (13)
13 - Eric Gemmell (15)
13 - Bert Swindells (16)
11 - Maurice Wellock (12)
11 - Tom Keetley (12)
10 - Tony Lormor (6)
10 - Frank Lord (13)

Paul Hayes looks most likely to join that list. He has eight goals already and is still only 30.

Thanks Mad John,

Garwood is a surprise, Colchester wasn't he. Wolves never played us much but Steve Bull must of got the lions share of their goals .

5 goals in 3 games then... ahh the chicken, I reckon we'd have had him sussed by the time he left Barnet and was too good to play in the bottom league against us...

Just thinking of consistent lower league scorers, what about Flounders from Scunthorpe?

Is that just while at Pools ?

Remember Baker getting 4 when we beat Stockport 5-0, and think he got 2 when we beat them 3-1

Wonder if he got any against them when he played for the likes of Scunthorpe

Was it not Scunthorpe Baker got 4 against, one of them an overhead kick?

Andy robinson? I know he's a midfielder but I reckon he's banged a few in against us.

No it was Stockport as has already been said the scores when we played them that season were;

Stockport County 6-0 Hartlepool United
Hartlepool United 5-0 Stockport County

What I do find interesting is we signed Tony Lormor and Lincoln signed Joe Allon. I reckon a lot of lower league players have made coin over the years by getting moves to clubs they have played well against. Neil Warnock says in his very good autobiography that he was a very average lower league player who'd have half a dozen good games a season but would end up getting a move to one of the clubs he'd played well against!

Weird how I'd always remembered that as Scunthorpe. I was 8 at the time mind!
