Me and the lass and the bairns are stopping in the centre of Durham on Thursday night, and could do with a pub we can all go in at tea-time that does decent food.

Can anyone recommend one?

Are you set on a pub or are you looking for good food, ie restaurant? Any type of food? and where are you staying?

There's a bunch of places for food on Millennium Square. Best pint is the Half Moon opposite the County Hotel - it's drinker friendly but don't try to palm off any Scottish notes - the landlord's a jockophobe!

Cheers.

We're stopping in the Premier Inn.

Restaurant would do but I fancy a pub tea.

Given that our lass is Glaswegian I'll give the Half Moon a miss!

A little lap dancing club close to the train station and Gresty Road. Extras available if you ask. Ask for Big Wendy, not the best looker and as the name suggests, carrying a little extra timber, but one of the best half an hours of my life.

Sorry wrong thread :uhoh:

Some decent pubs in the centre, but none do food ...

http://www.bridgehoteldurham.com/ is out by the station and is a bit dull but has decent beer and food and should be child-friendly. Seem to remember they had some newspaper clippings about Paul Staff behind the bar last time I was in as well ... but that was a while back - ECG may be able to elaborate.

The Bridge is a good pub, also you could consider The Garden House, just up the road from the Bridge heading out of the City Centre or The Court Inn next to the prison.

for some decent nosh and cheap drinks...

The Water House - Directly opposite the bus station and Yates' both bang in the centre of 'old' Durham. Both sell food and no problem with kids getting in through the day.

The Court Inn was always great for food and did fantastic home made chips. There is a Wetherspoons near the Gala too.

The Bridge does do good food and is certainly family friendly, the Court's food is ok, but it's regarded as one of if not the most expensive pubs in the City. Almost £4 for a Grolsch last time I was in.

One thing to note, it's the Halfords tour series on Thursday night, the city is going to be very busy with people watching the cycling. It starts at 7pm, I'll be in the Elm Tree, get yourselves there and I'll get the drinks in.

As I live in Durham here is my advice

The Bridge is decent but not very kid friendly-Paul Staff an ex Poolie was running it. Food good but not that child orientated.

North Road down from there is rough as a badgers ass- The Waterhouse is ok but a bit or a giro/hard drinkers pub-food ok and typical Wetherspoon but cooked quite well.

Yates- don't bother bit grimy-food ok but usually full of druggies, alchos etc and the only pub in the city to have old bill visiting daily and making arrests-bit like a wild west bar on a weekend.
Up the stairs from the Premier Inn is the gala area- Nandos, Ask,Chicquitos, Lloyds-The Bishops Gate-kid friendly but food is crap (I had 5 breakfasts in there and twice waited nearly an hour-4 out of 5n were sent back cold!! Might have improved but that put me off!)
If you turn left at the top of the gala theatre there is Oldfields-good restaurent- best in Durham and bit high brow but kids allowed and decent value early on.
Up from there on the right about 200 yards Tias mexican-i'd go there do Mexican menu, burgers etc-always been good when I've been in there and kids welcomed.

Hope thats a help-it will be busy and bits cordoned off cos of those fecking bike riders.
Not sure what arrangements Premier have for parking-Durham is a twat to park in and its dear

Not sure why you'd think the Bridge is not kid friendly, granted it doesn't have a wacky warehouse plugged to the side of it, but it does half portions of food and I've seen plenty of families in there.

Oldfields is cracking food, but there's only one menu with no childrens options and it's a bit on the posh side, best for big groups of friends or couples meals. Agree on Tia's though, love Onion blossom, just a shame it's all bottled expensive lager.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I may well take you up on the offer Mr PTBAP, provided I can get the bairns to sleep at a reasonable time.

Yeah, If it's the one I'm thinking of it's excellent, only been once but food was good and it's reasonably priced. Think it's called 'Shanghai'

It will be worth being in the City centre and having a watch of the Halfords Tour Series cycle race - some of the best cyclists in the country (or them fecking bike riders as the Deluded Mr Turner calls them - the same ones that will be getting us golds at the Olympics, by the way) at full speed over the seriously steep and dangerous Durham cobbled streets, there's always some big crashes at the bottom of the hill right in the centre and even non-cycling fans enjoy the event each year.

And it's managed by a Poolie as well

Why does everything you serve in your cafe always have chips with it, dont you know how to cook anything else ?

The Slug & Lettuce has always been good the few times I have been in & the Chinese Buffet that Mutley mentioned is also very good!

Some great advice here, especially the Chinese buffy. I love a buffy me, I always get my money's worth and the oldest can eat half his body weight in rice so I think we'll go there.

Cheers!

When you have tried them, you will know why, however, I also do rice, mash and a fantastic salad, everyone who comes in tells me they are the dogs, so unless they are pissing up my back and telling me it`s raining, then chips it is :happy-cheerleaderkid:

It was the one near the river, which was pretty good. We got in there just in time for the cheap sitting, about 5pm I think. Definitely the best Chinese buffy I've had, and I've been to plenty.

Best buffet I have had is a place called Cosmo, I went to the one in Edinburgh but they are springing up all over the place. They have about 10 dishes from indian, chinese, italian, seafood etc if you can get to one give it a go as was brilliant:
