Bands you don't "get"

Listening to the radio at work at Muse came on and I just don't get the appeal with them. Got me thinking about a few other bands I don't get.

1) Portishead
2) Kraftwerk

I just don't understand how people can listen and enjoy this music.

This. Although Blink 182 finally produced the odd decent track towards the end.

Nothing wrong with Snow Patrol, Travis or Coldplay..easy targets though.

To be honest I find myself listening to less and less music post-1969 as the years go on. Last 2 LPs I bought were by Gene Clark (ex-Byrds) and The Honeybus!

Snow Patrol have some great songs though, I couldnt tell you what their Singer even looks like as being an Old Fogey I tend to listen to songs and not watch videos on YouTube. Coldplay seem to be as you say, boring but I can think of far worse trvesties in modern music. For instance, what right does Will I Am have to judge peoples singing ability?

I went to see boring, safe Del Amitri last Sunday night, blasted through 20 of their hit singles, no fuss, no frills, best gig I've been to for a while. Quality songs..thats all its ever been about, surely?

Muse....seen them a few times and a great band live....even used Steetley a background during the gig in Seoul!

Ash...quality live band!

Kings Of Leon...great musicians....but a bit boring live!

Snow Patrol....loved them live and definitely stepped up to be a bit more lively.

Metallica....probably one of the best live bands (Foo Fighters and Linkin Park just better!) I've seen.

Coldplay....Chris Martin is a surprisingly good front man when playing live.

As much as I like Radiohead....saw them live with 80000 people and to be honest....as good as everyone thought....I didn't quite get it!

It's all about the live performance for me and how much you enjoy it.

You're all mostly listing bad or unimaginative bands; it's not that you don't get them, it's that you don't like them, or they're a bit dull. There's nothing to 'get' about Coldplay, Snow Patrol or Travis, and I suspect that's why most of you don't like them. As ECG says, they're easy targets as a result. The exceptions in the thread are bands like the fall, portishead, kraftwerk and Pink Floyd; they're either conceptual, difficult or experimental.

There have been many bands I just don't get. In fact if you were to list all the bands who've ever had a hit album, there are probably 90% of them I wouldn't bother listening to even if you offered me the album free. That includes big names like INXS, most of the Clash’s stuff, Lynyrd Skynyrd, anything the Stones did after about 1975, the Arctic Monkeys, Greenday, pretty much the whole of rap, can't be arsed to name them all.
I'm just a hard bugger to please.

cold play are boring as fuck, so why so many people like them is what I dont get.

On saying that, I suppose thats true for the majority of music sold.

My dad, and my father in law, both love that Andre ru bloke or however its spelt.

Its mind numbingly bad, yet owld people it like its the new rock and roll.

I quite like Springsteen as does my parents. Bought them tickets for when he played Stadium of Light, they left before it ended. It was over 3 hours non stop.. Think that would be too much for me as well, regardless of how much I liked them.

Yeah, three hours is ridiculous, I mean there must be about 48/50 songs in there which is almost five albums. Anything over an hour and a half, no matter how much you like the band is a bit self-indulgent.

I like Travis. Well, liked. Possibly a nostalgia thing. 'The Man Who...' paved the way for a developing taste in guitar music, and their first album 'Good Feeling' sounds like them doing their best Teenage Fanclub impression, so it can't be all bad.

I love dub me. I can understand why loads of people don't, but I'm surprised you don'tlike it. All the best instrumentation of reggae with the vocals stripped out and/or distorted, its my idea of heaven.
