The man who crafted The Angel of the North using steel from Hartlepool is knighted.

Goes to show if he got a knighthood simply for that then they're basically given out in lucky bags. Should be done away with anyway.

Beckham and Murray miss out, nothing for Mr Stelling, but FA Chairman David Bernstein a CBE.

Karen Brady made CBE - who has been working as a Government business adviser, what a surprise.

Katherine Jenkins and Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud have also been honoured.. Going by that I reckon I'll get honoured next year.

Thing is, no-one on here is likely to get a knighthood because we've got the wrong sort of name. You couldn't be Sir Demented Twig or Sir Mr I. Everyone would laugh.

Hmm...having said that, Sir Warwick Hunt sounds quite grand.

The editor of the Echo has been given an MBE that says it all really. Was it for journalism or fund raising for Darlo "bucket rattling again" 1883 ?

To be fair, the Echo does a LOT of fundraising for good causes, including children who need funding for cancer treatment etc. And they often run campaigns to highlight social problems in the North-east, at a time when other papers are usually running the 'benefit scroungers' line.

So, I don't mind their ed having the award, if anyone has to have it.

But the fact is that it the normal people who raise 99% of the money yet one person gets the so called honour. I would hazard a guess that Paul Smith has raised as much individually this year for charities than the editor of the echo has

Probably he has. Lots of people do things for charity that no-one else ever even hears about, so the awards are never going to be representative. But the editor of the Echo isn't a bad candidate. Better than, say, Penelope Keith and her ilk.

Can't see it being for saving Darlo, because getting three letters next to your name means you've done something significant for some time, and you've been successful.

However hard The Northern Echo tried to save Darlo Original, it wasn't enough to save them from becoming Diet Darlo.

I couldn't believe the Queen's gynaecologist got a knighthood and then I remembered about the time he found some feathers during an examination but agreed to keep the story out of the papers. Rumour is that he reckoned there had been a cockatoo up there.

Yeah! his dad got an OBE for toeing the line and keeping the miners quiet whilst their wages disintegrated during the late 60s/early 70s.

The editor of Echo does sail close to the wind sometimes with his views, says it like it is, not the usual Ed who toes the line. You would expect them to back their local team, would be interesting to see what the Mail would do if we were in a similar situation, god forbid!

Because many of the terrorists are in attendance. I agree the royal family should be abolished. Is te queen paying a bedroom tax or getting her benefits cut because of all the unused rooms at buck house?

The meetings supposedly didn't even exist about 7-8 years ago and anyone that claimed they did was labelled a looney. The last one in Watford got limited mainstream media coverage...

I thought I'd infiltrated them once but it turned out to be the Beiderbecke Group. They were planning to take over the world and make listening to trad jazz played on cornets compulsory.
