Was in Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon, the end of a long bike ride from Newcastle. For some food we visited a burger place called Holyrood 9a, one of the party enjoyed two pints of Peroni with his meal, each pint costing £4.95

http://www.theholyrood.co.uk/

The big fella would have clearly refused to pay these prices! I on the other hand had Stella 4 at a very reasonable £3.60 a pint.

Yes there is a wetherspoons about 5 mins walk from the train station.

Are you going to the zoo to see the pandas?

Fond memories of 'Bannermans Bar'....but I believe it has become a heavy metal haunt of late. Eating chips with Beamish stout in the Meadows (with friends....NOT on a bench) is another. Lovely city.

Get smashed in the wetherspoons or your hotel first. A few places charged £10 for double vodka red bull.

Why on earth do people drink Red Bull?

Its awful stuff.

On another note:

What is it with the constant references to Peroni?

Regardless of the price and the taste, its just sounds like a lasses drink.

I prefer Monster over Red Bull like. Peroni is a decent drink and maybe because it's usually the most expensive pint at a pub.

The wetherspoons on George Street was cheap enough, there are nicer places but the most over priced ones are the traditional pubs found on the Royal Mile clearly aimed at bumming tourists, rather than aimed at tourists who are bummers.

I dunno, the value of a pint of Karlsbräu, the most undrinkable lager I've ever not been able to drink, is actually negative because they should pay me 5 snodgeurs to drink it instead of asking for 5 snodgeurs ((c) ATFC). That means its real cost is 10 euros a pint. I'd rather pay 4.60 for a Peroni (prolly six euros here) which at least is bland rather than repulsive.

just to confirm:

If I was out with some mates, and it was my round, and one of them decided he wanted a pint of Peroni and £6 a pint he would be met with, "piss off you pretentious c unt, you can have a pint of Carlsberg like the rst of us".

Jesus it make me angry this place.

If it helps I wouldn't drink with people who were tight.

Do people really ask the prices of drinks before buying them anyway? If I go out then I do it to enjoy myself with the money I have in my pocket not to count pennies, I do that later.

If I walk into a bar I prefer to look for a beer that the local pubs usually don't have. Like Peroni, Tiger etc.. I get sick of drinking the likes of Carling, Fosters and Carlsberg so its a nice change. I don't really care how much it costs.

Speaking of lager, Tesco are selling a Czech one called 'Vratislav', for a quid a bottle.
It tastes as good as any, but seems to be cheap simply because no-one much has heard of it yet.

Wait, why am I telling you this.......?

I've been getting this for a while now, £1.05 a bottle 5% and it tastes decent.

That's true like.

If I see a bar with a few lagers I've never heard of or rarely see I'll try them first over the ones I know.

Staropramen was discovered that way 'hic'

Have you ever tried proper beer? Something like an IPA at this time of year is spot on. And it won't bloat you up like lager either.

Who drinks pints when they're out? It's not very sophisticated is it? Lager is only acceptable at barbequeues, under the mill house stand and on hot summers days in your own garden and it must be coors light or corona. Anyone with lime in corona is also an actual bender.

I dont know why people put limes in the mexican / spanish beers. The reason this was invented was in the countries they originate from its to keep the flies off the beer as we dont have this problem in the UK its all for show and you look like a git.

Yes, plenty. Been a member of CAMRA for past few years. Not a huge selection in Hartlepool of real ales. But I always look out for them.

Mojitos are good summer drinks. I had some ace cocktails in a tiny bar in London but the set up would never work up here, £20 to get in for two hours, take your own booze in and the bar person mixed drinks using freshly squeezed juices. We ended up staying nearly 3 hours and got hanmered for £40 and used bottles we'd not touched for a few years.

Peroni is a lovely pint, especially on a hot summers day. It's also rocket fuel that get's you merry in half the time muck like Fosters does. If you look at it like that it's better value

I think it's £3.96 in the Tall Ships, I might have a stroll over for one now come to think of it. Carling and Fosters are nearly three quid, I know what I'd rather have for a 90 odd pence difference.

Aye it's decent in there. I'm in king johns at the minute, and they have a decent selection, about 6 ales and only £1.75 a pint

I'm lucky enough to live close to a high concentration of pubs all of which sell loads of ales. The Hop Pole has a minimum of 4 at any one time, Crown has a minimum of 14, Victoria has a minimum of 12, Last Post (Spoons) usually has at least 8 to choose from, Malt Shovel 4 or 5 and Greyhound 4 or 5.

They are all within 5-10 minutes walk of each other. They're always getting new ones - even if you went out every night of the week it would be hard to keep up with every one of them.

There's a big market for proper beer down here, and it's the same in Derby. I'm going to the festival in Derby on Thursday night which will have about 300 to choose from, but the biggest is the one at Nottingham Castle in October which has over a thousand.

I went to the Great British Beer Festival in Earls Court a few year back and I was in heaven, had over 500 different ales. Yorkshire is always good for ale, Wakefield especially. I'm just about to start brewing my own.

It makes me really sad that Hartlepool and the rest of the north east is so dry of proper beer, when it was once a real oasis.

One of my mates who supports Notts County came up when we played them and expected all the pubs to be overflowing with it, only to be quite disappointed.

I agree, King Johns wasn't too bad for ales mind, but still poor selection in the North East.
