I'm working in Portsmouth next week, stopping in Southsea. Can anyone tell me which pubs are decent/to be avoided?

I like proper beer and no weirdos. Somewhere quiet where I can read the paper will do me.

I've heard the Arsegrabbers Arms is definitely a no no.

There used to be a little boozer just off the sea front which did cracking scrumpy and real ales, but that was the thick end of 20 years ago, I can't remember it's name or exactly where it was and don't know if it's still there.

A great example of the top precise information the bunker can provide.

There's only one in the Good Pub guide, PiN.
It's called Wine Vaults and, despite the name, is a pub and has 8 changing real ales. Even mentions newspapers.

If you go, please report back for my personal records.;)

Ahhh but will you pay more than £3.50 a pint, if so you are classed as gay under the ADG rules of the world.

£3.50 on the south coast may be pushing it, so I don't want to incur any wrath.

I could do with an opinion from Dibble on Wetherspoons, as you can get good ale in them for under £3 all over the country.

I think the main road what cuts right through where all the boozers are, is called Albert Road. That's where we got pissed up any rate

I went in a decent boozer in Southsea with my mate Paul before the Southampton derby with Portsmouth and the prices and the crack were very good.

Unfortunately I got so rat arsed I can't remember anything apart from going in there.

The carpet was green if that helps. :-D

I started in the Barley Mow, which proudly displays a Good Beer Guide sticker in the window. The pint in there was off and I was tempted to chip into a conversation between some gobshite who was telling a Scotsman his kind were 'too open' when speaking to people. Thankfully the Jock gave him short shrift.

Then onto the Hole in the Wall, which had decent beer but full of Mr Shouties with nowt but shit patter. Why do southerners feel the need to ruin the atmosphere with crap impressions of Del Boy and Peter Kaye?

Now in the Kings Road Tavern. Decent beer and friendly northern barmaid, but they're playing jazz music on the wireless. Just a half in here.

Eldon Arms is properly old fashioned and has framed covers from vintage porno mags on the walls!

Albert Road is a good shout. Imagine York Road with all the commercial properties from the Burn Valley to the Ossoldo open for business and you're halfway there. Had a Thai meal to soak the beer up and I'm back on it. The Leopold is the best pub of the night so far. Nice pint of proper stout and no dickheads.

The Phoenix off Albert Road isn't too bad, apart from the too loud jukebox belting out deafening Bonnie Tyler.

Poncy, prententious, expensive, full of posers, no idea how this one got in the guide.

Now in the Fat Fox, which is pretty lively for a Tuesday night. I'm approaching pissedness so I think this will be the last one.

I'll give that one a miss, then.
It must have been the the 8 changing beers that got it into the Guide.
Whatever happened to the long, tangled hair, unwashed, sandalled, bearded image of real ale pubs? sctatchinghead
You knew what to expect in those days.

And me, on Sunday.

According to Fensy, it's on Saturday, so you'll be too late.
But I'm not going unless there are hippies.

If you want to know who served your 'mates'.... surely asking the question on a message board 300 miles from the location is just a bit unlikely to get you an answer....
Hastings is a shithole...... apart from the fishing quarter.

I love that song.
Have just listened to Henderson singing it on Youtube. First, Cole Porter was a genius and, second, Henderson had a hell of a vocal range, to be able to sing it.
