A Tory MP is bringing proposals to name August Bank Holiday " Margaret Thatcher Day" .. I feel there are far more deserving people to name a Bank Holiday after.. St. Margaret will be turning in her grave

He should have electrodes attached to his testicles for that idea. Her old mate General Pinochet refined the technology so it shouldn't be hard to get hold of the right kit.

By the looks of the rest of the proposals the next move for the tories after the election will be a pact with the Raving Monster Looney / UKiP party!

We could all stand on the cenotaph and sing "Tramp The Dirt Down". Nice to see Elvis C do that song at "Glasto" and his very dignified introduction proves that you can be critical, without being hateful. Frankly I'd have just dedicated it to the bitch and suffered the backlash.

Aye, but then he is a pretentious 'lovely lovely person'. Unarguably Morrissey and Bono top the list but Costello and Billy Bragg are fighting hard for the third spot.

Bragg, followed by Weller, then Chris Martin of Coldplay. Bonos a good shout too. Last time I saw U2 the political shit inbetween the songs were longer than the actual songs. Same with Weller although he has calmed down a bit and now concentrates on re-creating the greatest hits of Traffic and The Move and claiming they are HIS songs.

I deserve to appear in that list.

Costello isn't pretentious, hes just a genius. The angry young man has long been replaced by the beloved entertainer. You'd go a long way to see better gigs than his recent spinning songwheel shows, or his blistering "Glasto" appearance.

being political doesnt make them pretentious.

Costello is or was Political, as is Billy Bragg.

The world needs singers like them.

What it doesnt need is pretentious tree hugging ponces like Bone, Chris Martin and Ricky Martin.

I'm not so sure. Some of the Smiths stuff is classic, his solo stuff less so, and if you listen to his Desert Island Discs interview he came across as an utterly self-obsessed nasty tosser.

This
Greatest songwriter this country has produced, his interviews are funny but at times slip into self parody, his music, especially with the smiths stands pretty much head and shoulders above the rest

Mmmmmmm.

Mediocre lyrics, average songs, made somewhat special by a brilliant guitarist.

I see your point, though I never thought that Mick Jones was all that.

Mick Jones out of Foreigner is better

A lot of them are hypocrites though

John Lennon for example, oooh woman are great, I love 'em me, while he fucks his nanny and slaps various others around

Sting, oh the rainforest, turn your fridge off and don't use any leccy, but I'm off to America, on the Concorde, then in my Jaguar, with its welcome to the board big engine and bits of tree and cow

The pair of canoots

I refer the above poster to the lyrics of Mr Costellos 1991 minor hit "The Other Side Of Summer"...

"Was it a millionaire, who said Imagine No Possessions, was it a public schoolboy who said We Don't Need No Lessons?"

clever bloke, I always thought Imagine was a crock of shit and as for Another Brick In The Wall...well...

Without You is a great song, but I can't see them naming August Bank Holiday Monday after him!

Oh, I don't want a Bank Holiday named after, I just like listening to Harry..... but to be honest, I never was a fan of 'Without You'.... but that's the fun of personal choice.

"Without You" by Harry Nillson was a cover version, it was originally by Badfinger and written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the Welsh band.

Both had early deaths by suicide, with Pete Ham joining a list of musicians that didn't live beyond 27, very sad.

Peter Bone ended up speaking for only 9 seconds due to delaying tactics. Still 9 seconds too long. Oh well at least he had his short spell in the sun.

Billy Bragg gets really bad press. I've met the bloke countless times and he gets sucked into this political juggling. He's not keen on doing what he was doing in his 20's in his 50's but he such an open bloke he'll talk and then he gets paraphrased. He knows his records sold because of his youthful politics and admits it's the price of getting lucky. Don't run away with the idea that he's still bright red though.

Saw him getting interviewed at his place surrounded by his collection of model buses. Funny but some things you just don't associate with certain people, from angry young man to undercover modeller.

I just can't connect with that song any more since some horrible wailing woman murdered it.
Dion? Carey? Houston?
