The flat I live in has an immersion heater and I'm buggered if I can figure out why I only get no more than about 5 minutes hot water when in the shower

It's a Megaflow model, quite big

it also has two switches one runs into the top and the other into the bottom, what are they for?

Also how long should I leave it on for and what kind of k/w does it use

This is cause I think I'm having my eyes ripped out by E.on and I'm pissed of with the amount of hot water I currently get

Certainly not an electrician or plumber but I lived in. Flat a while back that was the same. One switch was for the backup tank and the other for the main.

You leave the main one one most of the time and you use the backup if you are going to need a lot of hot water.

D you have them both switched on? Maybe you have just the smaller backup tank on?

You need to figure out which one is the main tank and leave it on permenantly as it heats the water slowly. The emergency tank heats it quickly and it costs a fortune.

Conkering with Mr Snowy

Also

Check the wattage of the heater (s).. Have a look at the meter and see how fast the whizzy disc is going round on the different settings or meter is clocking up if itsa digital one .. One of the circuits for the emersion heater could be open circuit. If it is a dual wattage .

Is the shower gravity fed or pumped, is it a standard shower or multiple outlets?

Do you shower every day or just have wash day on a Sunday?

He needs to ditch the cannabis farm; he'd use far less leccy then.

But his weed dealing empire would be in ruins so he'd be too skint to pay the reduced bill. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

More importantly, do you wash your armpits before your bollocks or vice versa?

Don't really know, suspect it's just a standard shower

Can't check the meter, they are locked away in a central area for all the flats, or 'apartments' as they call them

Can't see a thermostat or owt else on the tank, its a big one
