Okay so I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I saw this was a forum devoted to Hartlepool so I figured you guys must know what it's like best.
This is going to be kind of random so bear with me.
I'm going to be moving to Sunderland in September, to love at their Uni halls, as I've been given an offer to do a Law Foundation degree. But twice a week I'll be travelling from Sunderland to Hartlepool, to have lessons/lectures at Hartlepool Sixth Form college.
I have to admit I've never been to the north east before, but I do really like the culture and the people I've met here in London who come from the north east. I chose Sunderland because the north east seems much friendlier than London which I've gotten bored of.
So that's the other thing, I'm from London and was raised here. I'm a girl, and 20 years old. The thing is, is that whilst in London I would probably be considered 'white' by some, in the north east I'm not sure this would be the case, I know in Sunderland there are a lot of international students so people wouldn't think about it, but I'm a bit worried that in Hartlepool I might stand out, or that I might get comments. People usually guess me to be from places like Italy, or as being a Latina and they tell me I look quite Hispanic. In reality I am a quarter Swedish, a quarter Spanish, a quarter Moroccan, and a quarter North Indian-Guyanese. So I am very mixed. I'd say my skin tone/look is probably similar maybe to something like this:

I can upload a picture of myself if you'd prefer. But I was just wondering if I'd be likely to face any comments when I am in Hartlepool. I'm sorry if I sound really ignorant when speaking about this topic, but I'm just really worried! I've been to the North West many times before, some people assumed I was fully British, and everyone was really, really nice to me and no one made any comments. I've also been to small towns in Wales, and again, I had no issues whatsoever, they where some of the friendliest people I've ever met.

Some extremely ignorant folk might, but we have no more or less of them than anywhere else.

Unfortunately we have a few of them on here too, but I suppose it takes all sorts to make the world go round.

Thanks for the info :) I'v never experienced any type of racism anywhere in the Uk, the only place I've been asked a few ignorant questions (such as, 'how can your eyes be so brown?! brown eyes aren't very nice' :-D) was in Sweden..kind of ironic seeing how I was born there. But yes I agree, there's different opinions everywhere you go..

If this is a legitimate thread I would say I generally wouldn't worry or care what anyone would say or think. There will minority wherever you are but it's nothing to worry about.

Looking at those pics she should be more worried about ageing lecherous pervs but as BBC TV centre isn't in Hartlepool she should be ok.

If you've never experienced racism before why the fuck do you feel the need to ask us dear hartlepool folk what people might think of you? I'm offended you're even asking that type of question. Its 2013 up here to you know not just in london, you'll get abuse for asking stupid things that will offend people rather than anything to do with your skin.

Because I had read a few stories online about Hartlepool if I'm honest, one of which was about a French man and his family who were apparently driven out because of racism. And I'd just read this thread
http://www.pooliebunker.co.uk/newbunker/viewtopic.php?p=548032

I don't see why it made you so mad. Obviously I know the vast majority of people in Hartlepool would have no issues with seeing someone who looked slightly different, and they're probably really friendly. I was just a bit worried as it's like 200 miles away and I'll be living in Sunderland for the next 4 years, and I've never been there.

Its offensive to ask "hello are you lovely people racist" because thats what you're asking really.

There's racism anywhere, the north east is no different to the rest of the uk.

I, along with most other people will get along with anyone regardless of race.

The thing with this site is its a football forum, people have some good banter and a laugh and things may come across wrong so dont read too much into certain comments. Its only the stuff you'd say and hear with your mates down the pub.

He wasn't a Frenchman, he was a monkey in a French uniform!

bbolt

Lol, no he was French:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tees/8654147.stm

Quote:
A Frenchman who moved to Hartlepool with his wife and children has claimed his family has been forced to leave their home because of racial abuse.
Dr Vincent Auger, 36, of St Paul's Road, said his car windows were smashed and his children were spat at after he complained about noisy neighbours.
He is staying in the UK but his family returned to France on 16 April.
A police spokeswoman said that the force "understands" the situation and officers have visited his home.
The family moved to Hartlepool nearly four years ago.
Three weeks ago, Gwendoline Auger, 36, and their four children Jean, 10, Quentin, eight, Gregoire, six, and Lucie, four, moved back to France because they felt "intimidated".

Not that it matters though. You get this sort of thing from all people around the world, regardless of race or anything like that.

Do any of you post on theapricity.com? It's a pro-European forum which is quite good. They are looking for more English members.

Ignore him, Yates's is awful. Except on karaoke Wednesdays, when it is still awful, but you can laugh at weirdos trying to sing.

I'll be honest, I was expecting to be directed to a porn site.

To be fair it looks good but it's not my cup of tea.

It's mostly for race classifications and stuff but there's a lot of nice members on there :) And some kind of weird ones too unfortunately.

Silvershine i am an excellent tour guide...

I think however your views are mental. We 'up here' aren't stuck in the middle ages, just because one Frenchman got some dodgy neighbours and hopped it back home doesn't mean we're all like that. You're pretty pale, but even if you were black or anything else you still wouldn't have any bother up here.

As mentioned by offshorepoolie, you don't get views like this in that there London...

Enjoy it.

Blah, blah, blah.

Thats before we even get onto the fact you claim to be currently unemployed, support Darlo, and had a photo of Paul Scholes as your cover photo on Facebook.

I bet she is wishing she was real right now, what with you offering your services, and being such a catch.

sctatchinghead i must have really hit a nerve with you Chip, talk about derailing a thread eh?? What a rant!! Are you....no surely not?? Are you trying to intimidate me by letting on 'what you know' about my life?! Surely not!! clappp It comes to something when you're looking on my Facebook account for ammunition!

Where's the issue with having Paul Scholes as my cover photo? I think you'll find it's long since been changed. Bloody hell, a tribute to a legendary footballer and you're using it to bad mouth me with  basically, i could save a bunch of kids from a burning building, bring about world peace then invent a cure for every affliction ever and you'd still pick fault with something i did  Your credibility amounts to less than zero but you keep chiseling away my little chum one day i'm sure you'll say something useful!!

If you've got that much of an issue with me then you know where i am on Facebook (which is slightly Josef Fritzl-esque/creepy/stalkerish but i'll let you off), you can always PM me on here or alternatively you can rock up on my doorstep if you're that way inclined. Until then shut up because your little one man crusade is making you look like a complete muppet.

Is that some kind of threat ? Dont take the piss with me you daft Loid.

Hey if you're big enough to abuse people you've never met over the internet then be big enough to take some stick back. That's the way it works isn't it?

Don't come crying on here because i am not and will not be intimidated or abused by you, or anyone else for that matter. I always stand up for myself whether in person or on here, doesn't matter who you are or where you come from what gives you the right to abuse anyone else??? Exactly.

Yes I'm sure I'll enjoy it :] Unfortunately I have to kind of agree with you about London, it has some really nice points but then other parts of it are kind of ugly and not particularly anything special at all. I guess if I can handle being raised in Hackney then Hartlepool will be a bit of a breeze
