Can anyone confirm if there was a minutes silence yesterday and if so, who was it for?

Apparently a few clubs are now doing it to remember the people who have died in the past 12 months that had some relationship with the club, lifelong supporters etc .

A well-respected church organist died in Sheffield on Christmas Eve, so it wouldn't be surprising if the silence was dedicated to him.

A horrible story that one, a 20 year old and 40 year old kicking the shit out of a church going, charity working pensioner the day before Christmas. Hopefully they'll never see the light of day again but they probably will.

I'm probably in a minority of one here, but there seems to be a minutes silence or the new fad of a minutes applause at virtually every other game these days. Are we going to have one on Tuesday for all the turkeys that died over Christmas ? These things can be taken too far and only serve to detract from the occasions when they are genuinely merited.

Comparing a turkey to the soldiers that have lost there lives for this country is disgusting. Showing some respect is obviously something missing from you and I hope your right and you are in a minority

....or you could have wrote ....."I don't believe it ....! I turn up for a football match and some clown decides to have a minutes bloody silence, who asked me ..... was I considered in all this.....? Do these people realise tbe inconvenience and stress this causes me, having to stand silent for a full minute ....eh? ...that's a whole sixty seconds wasted I can never get back, for what ....? If people want to go jolning the forces it's nowt to do with me, it's a risk they take,"....
...... you might as we'll have, astonishingly crass.

As an ex-forces member, words almost fail me.

You continue in your cosseted little world where everything just happens and no-one is instrumental in making it so.

Yes, it's all magic.

Woah, surely OOP is more than entitled to have his opinion on minutes silences without people taking the moral high ground against him.

I have stated a few times on here that I find the number of minutes silences excessive these days, I never understand why you have to pay a minutes silence to someone just because you're at a football match. I thought the decision to have one on Saturday was a strange one (I wasn't aware that there were representatives from the armed forces there) but even still I find it slightly odd as I've been at events before were there were similar representatives and a minutes silence has never been conducted, there may well be special reasoning for the one yesterday though. Does this mean I wouldn't have paid my respects had I been there? Does it mean I don't have anything but admiration for the bravery and sacrfices made by the armed forces? Of course not.

There are a lot more minutes silences/applauses these days at football matches than say 15-20 years ago..I can't really understand why.

It's simply a matter of respect mate.

It, and all about it, especially if, as it was yesterday, about people who have lost their lives in the meaningless conflicts that Britain gets involved in on another countries behalf.

Saddens me. sadx

Don't denigrate them.

I've got little doubt your opinions on these losses of our soliders are the same as mine and OOP. That isn't the point either of us have made though.

Sheffield United were celebrating (if that right word) 150 years of football at Bramall lane yesterday. Within that celebration they decided to invite a Yorkshire Regiment to the ground and to pay respects not only to soldiers from Yorkshire who had served in Yorkshire regiments but all armed force personnel who had lost their lives as part of the day.

What some have taken offence to is not you TPP asking why a minute silence was held but "holding one for turkeys". That remark is out of order, the poster could have made his point in a valid way which people could have understood and without causing offence to some.

And the line "These things can be taken too far and only serve to detract from the occasions when they are genuinely merited".

I reckon if the one thing that a minutes silence is merited for at any time is for the armed forces that have died over the years fighting wars. The PA announcer stated that the minute silence was for all those armed forces personnel who had lost lives in wars. Those at the game knew what it was for and duely paid there respect.

Some people say if you have nothing nice to say keep the F*** quiet, well can I suggest if the original poster wants to put the deaths of soldiers in Afghanistan/ Iraq WW1 WW2 on the same level as killing turkeys for Christmas he does exactly that and keeps the F*** quiet

I am also of the thinking that there are way too many minutes silences these days and having them almost every game does de-value the meaning.

Maybe there are, who can say, but in this case it was a justifiable one minutes silence and the problem wasn't in raising the point, it's the way it was raised.
This is a sensitive subject and that should be borne in mind when broaching the subject.

How is it over used? It's either for soemone connected to the club or a national event or significance.

Woah!!!

He raised a valid question nothing more. He didn't say 'fuck 'em, they shouldn't have been in Afghanistan' whilst burning a handful of poppies. he simply questioned how often these minutes are held and whether any potential overuse dilutes the meaning.

Who actually gives a fuck. Observe the silence and get on with your life. To still be having a discussion about it now is embarrassing.

You and Birthmark have 7 pages of tripe every week debating things and others endure it yet you have the audactity to moan when people talk about something for one day? Staggering.
