GATESHEAD new-boy James Brown has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a double hernia.

National Lottery: Continue Supporting UK Sport

But Ian Bogie believes the arrival of Ryan Donaldson has softened the blow – and the Heed boss is expecting “big things” from the former Newcastle United starlet.

Brown joined the Tynesiders this summer following his release by Hartlepool United, where he had struggled with injuries over recent years.

He figured in a handful of pre-season fixtures, but has yet to make his competitive debut after a scan revealed a double hernia.

The 25-year-old faces surgery next week, and Bogie expects him to be sidelined for “five or six weeks”.

In better news on the injury front, Jamie Chandler and Yemi Odubade may yet miss tonight’s trip to Stockport County, but the pair should be available for Monday’s home game against Lincoln City.

And Bogie says the acquisition of Donaldson is a further boost to his squad.

The 21-year-old was released by the Magpies at the end of last season and has spent spells with Carlisle United and St Johnstone during pre-season.

But he has now signed a deal that runs until January 1.

And Bogie said: “I’ve seen Ryan over many years at Newcastle United – he’s a very talented player.

“He’s come from an environment of playing Under-21 football, or with the reserves, and being in touching distance of the first team on occasions through his career.

“So we’re expecting big things of him.

“He’s come in, had a week’s training with the lads and I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to the squad.”

Looking ahead to this evening’s match at Stockport, Bogie is keen to steal a march on those rivals playing tomorrow, and end the night second in the Blue Square Bet Premier table.

The Heed boss said: “We’ve got to make sure we can take our current, early-season form into the next two league games.

“A positive result, a win, on Friday will put us second top of the league, that’s what we’ve got to look at.

“We could be second top with all the other clubs on Saturday chasing a win to go above us.

“That’s what we’ve got to look to do, and really impose ourselves on the opposition and go for it.

“We’re in for a difficult night, but we got a good return against Stockport last season, we won the two games, and hopefully we can do the same again.

“It’s a great Football League standard stadium, a good pitch and there should be a decent crowd, so we’re looking forward to it.”

I'm actually going to the Stockport - Gateshead game tonight. Friend of mine is a big Stockport fan. It would have been nice to see Browny play but I'm sure Ryan Donaldson will provide me with all the goals that I can handle. bbolt

massive shame for Brown, the lad had genuine talent and class. Poise on the ball and an eye for goal, could always beat a man for fun and score from all angles inside the box. Big loss to the pro ranks, never mind Pools. If he didn't have glass knees he would definitely have been Pools' first £1m sale
