I dont believe he should have went. On another point I hope he is nowhere near the opening ceremony for the Olympics but i bet you any money he is involved in the final build up to the lighting of the torch. In my mind there are only two people who should and diserve to light the torch, Sir Steve Redgrave or Tanny Gray-Thompson.

Can he? I'm not so sure, he's playing in a very poor league and he's 37.

To be fair to him he said he only wanted to be selected on merit, and he wasn't picked. So, end of story.

He was in the original squad but it has to be trimmed down and Stuart Pearce said he wanted more defensive options. Hardly surprising for an ex-full back.

I think Stuart Pearce is dense and should be nowhere these roles of authority.

Just look at that friendly against Holland. Making Scott Parker captain and the ridiculous quotes about a captain 'being selfless' He was in charge for one game, leave the captaincy alone. He has no thought of the upcoming Euros when he picked that squad either it was like a job interview for himself. Picking Frazier Campbell out of pure sentiment was another classic.

Say what you like about Beckham he's patriotic and he's popular. He's never retired as an England player, he was even coming back from LA at the arse end of his career to sit on the bench in meaningless friendlies. Previously Great Britain has not given a shite out the Olympic tournament it's only because it's here. Who's going to galvanise the public and create interest in it, Beckham or Micah Richards??who by the way only a month ago REFUSED to be on stand-by for England's Euro squad. Nice one 'psycho'.

But he's picking a playing squad, not a popularity contest.

Take away all this great servent and great ambassador stuff... he's picking on playing ability alone.

You are aware that Argentina and Brazil take this very seriously and always have done?

A few of the African nations as well, we aren't going to win it are we?

Beckham could still offer something as well, arguably more than Bellamy.

you've hit the nail on the head, they take it seriously so pearce has too aswell.

By picking beckham it would purely have been out of sentiment, he's 37 playing in a micky mouse league.

Pearce went to watch him 3 times so he's clearly seen enough to know he's not up to it.

I dislike Pearce immensely in his role and I have a lot of time for Beckham, but this is a good decision if you ask me. Olympic footy may not be the most prestigious footballing event but it is part of the Olympic games and should be treat with integrity. That means picking the best players available instead of using up one of the over-23 spaces to sell tickets or as a 'reward' to somebody that has done work in winning the games.

The 3 players selected have all just had good seasons at the top level and offer more in a playing capacity right now than Beckham does.

I'd have snubbed Richards for thinking he's too good to be a stand-by for his country and going on holiday.

Bellamy... Good season?

Bellamy was one of Liverpool's best players. Scored crucial goals, plenty of good allround performances. He's one of the few there that can hold their head up high after their season.

He's still a good player playing effectively at the highest level. Beckham isn't. I'd also looking at the potential squad say the need for a forward and a commanding defender is more important than a midfielder.

He only played 20 odd games, starting only 12 league games.

You'd have thought one of Liverpools best players might have got picked more?

20 odd good games in the Premier League is better than the 30 that Beckham played in a level that Pools would do alright at. The only reason he didn't play more games is due to injuries.

Bellamy is still a good player despite what people think of him.

It means his inclusion would have created a massive interest. Nobody seriously gives a fuck about the Olympic football tournament but his inclusion would have put bums on seats and made people watch on TV. I think Pearce was wrong to include him in any preliminary squad if he wasn't going to pick him.

It's a massive PR bollock I bet plenty of people in high places are furious with Pearce.

Especially as GB play a few of their games at Old Trafford, his omission will now cost them money in less ticket sales. Before anybody says you dont buy a tciket to see one player, there was a guy on talk sport yesterday who had been bought 2 tickets for his birthday to take his son to the Riverside to see GB play Brazil, he isnt going now that Beckham wont be playing.

I think this could be the end of Stuart Pearce.

More fool that man than Pearce.

Beckham wanted to be picked on form and merit, he's been left out on form and merit, can't ask any fairer than that can you?
