The Basic 'Rules' of Cricket

You have 2 sides,

one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out,

and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in,

until he's out.

When they are all out,

the side that's out comes in,

and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When both sides have been in and out,

including the not outs, that's the end of the game.

Repeat those instructions for test match cricket, eachteam has two chances, if one or both of those teams does complete the two innings then it's a draw.
Gentlemens game see, a result can not be gained unless both teams have had full fair crack of the whip, so to speak.

For the World cup it is One Day cricket so simply each team has 50 overs to score the most runs.

the down side to test cricket is, if a team like Australia has a nightmare in the first innings, then you know for a fact that they won't have another one in the second (unlike England)!!!!!!!
It makes test cricket a bit more predictable, and test matches between two evenly matched sides are more like a war of attrition.
One day cricket is not what the purists like, but it is my personal favourite type of cricket to watch. Desperate run chases don't require the finer arts of the game for either side, but it definitely gets the adrenalin flowing for both players and spectators.

if they have a nightmare in 1st innings that gives you plenty of time to build two decent innings, it also takes the pressure off leaving enough time to get them out in the 2nd (thus taking a draw out of it) so you are on the front foot.

The aussies though, in their 2nd knock cannot afford to take too long otherwise a draw is on the cards, and if they are the best team then maybe a draw against them is a decent result.

It is all about the balance of time and runs that makes test cricket so enthrawling and the adrenlin that is created in One day games can be spread over 5 days.

The One day game is top entertainment though and as you get a resolution in that one day / drinking session. Conversely if the weather intervenes you can loose the game totally, at least in test cricket there is always tomorrow.
