Jordan Mellish signs for the mighty Blyth Spartans. Only had a short term Pools deal apparently. Another example of not giving youth a chance. On Pools site today although he signed before Christmas.

That post might have had some weight behind it a month ago.

Not really going to be the case under Cooper though is it?

The fact the kid only got a half year deal suggests they weren't sure he was good enough in the summer.

Agreed PJ-not Cooper's decision. Looked on Blyth's site, Mellish signed on December 30th-not sure why Pools have announced this now? Saw Mellish 3-4 times , solid not spectacular but no worse than any of the other reserve defenders.
Seems odd to give a kid a half year deal? When exactly would he have had a chance to sign given the infrequency of reserve games? Lets hope Cooper takes stock? Rowbotham, Johnson, Holden had bit of a chance under Mick, hope Cooper keeps up the freshness of the squad as James and Baldwin have impressed so far.

Noticed as well that Johnson has had his loan with Workington Reds extended for a further month. Looking at the praise their manager has given him on the official site as well as the comments on their board he's obviously been a big player for them recently.

The kids are getting experience I suppose but to me a better organised reserve league would do the same, it needs a look as the Central League is pretty shite. Once we farm them out do they ever return? Personally if I was Cooper I'd attempt to offload the likes of Haslam, Boyd,Nish for fitness and Larkin when fit on short term deals rather than kicking their heels on the side lines. Personally we have a good youth set up, but for what? we dump more than ever feature.

Given short contract, deal not extended into New Year, so at a guess Barron would been the manager who decided not to offer extended deal, and he would have seen more of him than most. MW sacked 19th Dec, Barron in charge until 28th.

Thanks Bob, fair enough Micky has been running the reserves-in the handful of games I saw Mellish seemed a big player for the reserves. Why has the club just announced this today, seems a bit odd? I would guess there will be the usual youth clear out come May.

I have no idea until I saw this post didn't know he had gone, I(and I suppose many others) just presumed he had at least a year contract, from memory I can't remember seeing anything on OS that said was only a short term deal.

Maybe he just signed for Blyth today, let's say Pools give him 6 month contract, would have signed June/July so runs out Dec/Jan, maybe his contract just up. Won't be much but suppose say it few hundred a week that may well be on it's way to supplementing some wages for a loan player coming in. Not just the couple hundred a week but added to say something that Pools can afford but parent club not paying as much as Pools want and that amount added to whatever allows the loan to go ahead. Pure speculation on my behalf though

We cant give every youth a chance in the first team. Its not practical.

Im also pretty sure every team dumps more than they feature??

Just pasted this from Sky sports news, announced today : Hartlepool's teenage defender Jordan Mellish has signed for Blue Square Bet North side Blyth Spartans.

Mellish, 18, was offered his first professional contract by Pools in the summer, but the club have opted not to renew his short-term deal.

The centre-half worked his way through the centre of Excellence at Victoria Park, but was unable to force his way into the first-team squad

Although Blyth announced he'd signed on 30th December it must of just been made official today-mystery solved Bob.
I wonder if Pools are looking to ship others out?

I got his shirt in the Poppy Auction! Does that make it a rare collectible?

That said, the lad did say he'd had a lot of injury problems when I was talking to him.

Agreed, we get this on here everytime a young lad is released with reactions from some as if we have released the next Messi or something. If he was good enough he would be in the squad and have been awarded a contract.

This is part of the world of football where kids get signed to clubs with potential and only a small percentage make it in the game. Always has and always will be the case. I had a similar experience at Middlesbrough back in the mid 80's, signed as a kid released by 16 cos I had a broken ankle but basically I wasn't good enough.

Not a bad refelction on the club or MW or MB or Cooper just the way it is.

Good luck Jordan and every success for your future.

It would be impossible to give every youth a chance, I mean for a start we dont see them train everyday, im sure this is a much better opportunity for the lad.
