Trains are on - It's about 30 quid if you buy a HP - York return and then a York - Sheff return.... Plenty of trains on as well....

Yeah that looks the most likely option, have to rush to get the 3.21 return train as would prefer to be back earlyish. Any later train and wouldn't get back until after 9..

This must be the first thread ever where Grand Central trains have been mentioned and you haven't told us all how cool it is to fare dodge

Brammell Lane is a trek from Sheffield Railway - although I believe it is very much in a straight line from the station along a main road. It's probably a similar distance from the station as Hulls old ground was from Hull station so a trek and a half really....

Mind you, you can get a £15 return from York to Sheffield on Cross Country, and day return to York on Grand Central is about £11.

Grand Central leaves at 08:59 from the town and train back at 18:46 from York gets in @ 19:54.

You could make it in ten minutes if you knew the area and took the direct route to the away end, but if you go along Queens Road you couldn't. Cross the road and go along Shoreham Street but watch the bad lads in the Cricketers.

It isn't really fare dodging is it if they tell you to buy a ticket on the train then nobody comes round selling them ?

Earlier this month I was down Hammersmith for a meeting with Betfair. They were covering expenses so I actually needed a ticket and receipt for the train. Went Grand Central obviously, and I had to actually go and find someone to buy a ticket on the way down, and nobody checked my ticket on the way back.

Since they put the ticket barriers in at Kings Cross, they seem to assume everyone has one already, even though they are now using the platforms where there are no barriers.

we got on the East Coast without going through the barriers, ( platform 8) - accessed it from the side entrance next to platforms 9,10, 11 which are for the East Anglia-bound trains. We already had tickets as it was for East Coast, whose inspectors are only missing Lugers in their pockets . Mind you I'm sure he said," Ver are yowr paperss"?

should I take my steel piece of pipe down me strides? I'll just tell the muskers I've got a stork on so they won't be tempted to frisk me (unless it's a WPC of course, and who could blame her)?

Nah, just wave a bar of soap at them and they'll ferk off quick time.

My mate parked on their car park one night when he was at a gig in the Leadmill and blocked someone in.

When he came back they'd cracked one off on his door handle.

I agree, that isn't fare dodging.

However I would say 'Piece of piss fare dodging, no barriers at Sheffield. Heads down and all that' are the words of someone who thinks fare dodging is cool. Which most non peasant folk know it isn't.

Almost got away with fare dodging on the way to Charlton but about 5 minutes away from Kings Cross she spotted me! £50 for a single as I slept in and missed my prebooked train from Darlo!!!

Mind you it truly pains me when fare dodging to Newcastle, having to get off at Heworth and change onto the Metro to avoid the ticket barriers at Newcastle. But it still beats handing over coin to the cnts that are Northern Rail.

What do you do when the metro inspectors get on or are waiting at the barriers? sctatchinghead

Ye why pay to use the trains when you can dodge the fare. They will just keep putting the prices up for the honest people and that covers the scum who wont pay their way.

Bought a weekly for work from June through to November. The service was so unrelentingly pisspoor and the staff so unfailingly unhelpful, I ended up on a final written warning at work for lateness.

There was a passengers talk in arranged at Hartlepool station for the poor suckers using the service to meet the managers. Advertised time was 4-30 till 6-30, but when a few of us turned up at 6 o clock they had already gone, which pretty much sums up their attitude.

One week in October the train failed to turn up 4 days running. Sent me weekly pass off for a refund, they sent me a £5 voucher. Statement of exclamation was I meant to do with that ?

There comes a point where you get so hacked off with travelling on a service that would look shameful in a third world country, so hacked off with ramshackle, clapped out, overcrowded old trains, where they dont even put extra carriages on over Christmas, you end up thinking why bother paying at all.

If the trains are so horrifically over crowded the ticket inspector cant even get through the carriages to do his job, then thats their fking problem. Fk em.

what about Grand Central?

I like Grand Central, the staff are nice, or at least seem to be when they show their faces, and the only time I've ever gone for a train of theirs back from York that was cancelled, they sorted me out with tickets for another train.

However they have just been taken over by Arriva who I don't like at all, so I will be using their service without paying tomorrow.

Hopefully the takeover will see them issue more cheap advanced tickets as the pricing structure they've had in place over the last few years has been madness
