So am I right in thinking that 2 more straight wins will be the best ever run of results over 20 games or more?

Nice collection john.
Another rule which struck me as being commonsense was that the run must not finish or end with a defeat.
For example 18 straight wins (which has never been done in the FL) sandwiched between two defeats would still give 2.7 points a game if you added the defeats in but it would be a bit rich calling it a 20-game run!

It would be bloody close.

Cardiff had 18 wins and 2 draws from 20 games, and extended this with another win to make it W19 D2 L0.

Yes I would give the Palme d'Or jointly to Cardiff (for the full 25-game extended run) and Spurs (for the same achievement). If we equalled those performance this would truly go down as one of the very greatest runs in league history. It seems already to be in the top 20, which is one HELL of an achievement.

Anyway, we can afford one defeat in the next seven, right? ;)

By the way, we have now won as many games in our last 18 attempts as we had in our previous 66!

Jesus wept! Thats a scary statistic!

I just had to resurrect this. Thaks to Mad John for the original list and descriptions.

I reckon it's now time to move a magnitude higher with our comparisons. You have to compare like with like and a 23-game run with a high points yield is clearly a cut above a similarly fruitful 18-game run.

So if we raise the bar to 21 games unbeaten, this is what's left. There's a clear case for pronouncing this run one of the top ten greatest of all time - and it ain't finished yet! How does that sound? :sweeeet:

Arsenal 2001/02 Prem
W18 D3 L0, PPG=2.71

After 17 games Arsenal were in fifth place, six points behind leaders Newcastle. Their run of 18 wins and 3 draws from the next 21 matches took them to the title. They finished 7 points clear of Liverpool in second, and 16 clear of Newcastle. They began the 2002/03 season with seven wins and two draws to extend their run to W25 D5 L0 (2.67 ppg)

Bristol City 1905/06 Div 2
W20 D4 L0, PPG=2.67

Bristol City lost 5-1 at Man Utd on the opening day of the 1905/06 season. From that point on they didn’t look back, winning 20 of the next 24. They eventually won 30 of their 38 games with just one more defeat to add to their initial one. They won the title by four points.

Cardiff City 1946/47 Div3(S)
W19 D2 L0, PPG=2.81;
W22 D2 L1, PPG=2.72

Cardiff made a mediocre start to the 1946/47 campaign, winning 3 and losing 3 of their opening six fixtures. They then had an astonishing run of results, winning 19 of their next 21 with 2 draws. When this run ended in defeat they were eight points clear of QPR, and eventually won the division by nine points.

Chelsea 2004/05 Prem
W19 D3 L0, PPG=2.73

Chelsea were five points behind Arsenal after nine games, with the Gunners having started with eight wins and a draw. 22 games and 19 wins later they had a 13 point lead at the top. They remained unbeaten for the rest of the season and went on to win the title by 12

Chelsea 2005/06 Prem
W20 D1 L1, PPG=2.78

Following on from their title success, Chelsea began the 2005/06 season in a hurry, winning 20 of their opening 22 games, with just one defeat., resulting in a 16 point lead in mid-January. They eventually won the title by eight points from Man Utd.

Doncaster Rovers 1946/47 Div3(N)
W18 D2 L1, PPG = 2.67

A fantastic start to the 1946/47 season gave Doncaster a four point lead despite strong starts from Chester and Rotherham. Doncaster had an incredible season, eventually winning 72 of the 84 points available to them including 18 away wins from 21, and a season average of 2.57 ppg. They won the title by eight points.

Liverpool 1904/05 Div2
W21 D1 L2, PPG=2.67

A run of 21 wins out of 24 helped Liverpool to keep pace with an equally impressive Bolton. They eventually won 27 of their 34 games in the season, which was enough to see off Bolton’s challenge by a couple of points.

Sunderland 1891/92 Div1
W20 D0 L2, PPG=2.73

After losing three of their opening four fixtures, Sunderland won 20 of the next 22 to win the title with ease. They carried this form through to the next season, winning seven from eight to extend their sequence to 27 wins from 30.

Tottenham 1960/61 Div1
W17 D1 L1, PPG=2.74;
W22 D2 L1, PPG=2.72

A remarkable start to the 1960/61 saw Spurs establish a ten point lead by the turn of the year. This cushion allowed them the luxury of being able to lose a further six games and still ease to the title with room to spare.

John's original rules (adapted to the new situation and this revised list):

1) I have included league games only. Any of these runs may have been interrupted by games in various cup competitions. I have ignored these.
2) I have only included runs that lasted for a mimimum of 21 matches [was 18]
3) I have only included runs where the team averaged a minimum of 2.65 points per game based on 3 for a win.
4) Our current run is W19 D4 L0, a points per game average of 2.652
