When I met someone who had dope in the sixties I remember finding it extremely sinister and reckless. Frightened the fook out of me.

So I guess that's a "no" from me.

An interesting question. When you say drugs would that include alcohol and prescribed drugs as well? We’ll assume it’s illicit drugs for the time being. Illicit drug use has been going on for a very long time and has been associated with people in the arts – musicians, writers (excluding those from MB of course), actors, poets, painters etc as well as the upper classes. It’s been used to inspire people, get them through the day or get them to sleep at night. In the late 60’s when I started playing in bands there were a lot of people whose life revolved around drug use – not addicts but people who were into the (sub) culture of drug use and that included the illegality of it all. Remember, LSD had only just been made illegal (1966) – RD Laing (no not the singer KD Laing) the Psychotherapist was using the drug in his work, I read recently that they want to start using this form of treatment again as it had proven successful.
As a social experiment I would say that it led to a more creative time and, my own opinion this, took young people away from veering into left wing politics, following the anti Vietnam war mood and seeing the rise of student power both in France & the USA. This helped to maintain capitalism as the only acceptable ideology.
It should also be remembered that common drugs of the day, cannabis and LSD were a lot weaker than today’s equivalents – I’ve heard that cannabis today is more than 10 times stronger.
If the social experiment was for the rich to maintain their power base it probably worked for them, after all it is rarely them that have to put up with the effects of drug use such as inner city deprivation, poor housing and crime.

They also make a lot through the tax on profits from prescribed medicine. During the 70's & 80's Valium was widely presribed leading to addiction. It does seem strange on what is legal and what is not. Tobacco & alcohol are cited as the biggest dangers to health - yet are legal.
