...made by my brother. I don't know if it's been made on here yet, but if we get promoted, it's the first time Pools have done it without a manager leaving us part of the way through the season. Cloughie left, Knowles passed on and Turner left. Will this make Wilson just as big a legend by staying with us, or is it just part and parcel of inheriting a team that is League One standard that just needed morale and a little tweaking?

It wasn't the first day, we were at Bradford (drew 1-1) when we heard the sad news.

No he wasn't! Gus the Bus actually managed one game at the end of the *previous* season. The only mid-season switch was in the season before promotion.

I always have one regret about that day, I often think about it. I saw Steve Tupling on the morning of the match at Leeming Bar, and cracked onto him about the game, how well we were doing etc, general hero worship stuff. He must have known Cyril was dead, I didn't of course. :uhoh:

It was a strange sort of game that one normally you hear the rumours about things like that before you set off but we didn't know until we got into the ground I can still recall not moving when Dave Rush scored with his head just a very half hearted clap

I misread notes - sorry Mr Franglophile - actually he was appointed the role on 30th May 1967 after the club interviewed him, P Gordon and E Brown for the post. He was offered a salary of £2000 plus £500 if in top half of table and a further £750 if promoted. He was only called on that evening and accepted the terms. Peter Gordon (former Norwich player?) was to be offered the gig if he refused.

The previous season itself finished on 6/5 and Clough was still in charge and even offered a new contract on 9/5 and money to spend and even discussed the signing of new players. It was only on the 16/5 that Clough told the board of his desire to leave the club and move to Derby. They agreed to release him from 3rd June and offered the job to Peter Taylor who fooked us off and went with Cloughie.

Not trying to prove a point just clarifying things after my error re the date of appointment of the gus man
