Poppadoms, next door to krimos on the marina, would be my choice for a family tea.

I had possibly the worst fish and chips of my life last night. That fish had never even met a cod let alone be one. The chips were basically a potatoe mush and the peas were a green liquid.

Not everything is Hartlepool is bad, you still get the best fish and chips on the planet.

Totally agreed I wouldnt have fish and chips down here if you paid me. The crap they serve round here wouldnt cut the mustard at home and they would be closed within a week. I can only name 3 chippies here so the competition isnt great and they churn out rubbish.

How many are there in the town all of which would piss all over them down here, even that crap one on seaton front at the end near seaton hotel.

Towns chippies:
the odd cod
3 x seaton, almighty cod, youngs, tail end (the crap one)
Jutty road (which is suprisingly very good)
oxford road
verrels
fens shops (the biggest fish in town)
rossy shops
Britannia fisheries (near the old shakesphere pub)
Marinas in the town
Joanna's

there is 12 and i am not even trying

Have to say the almighty cod and the one on jutty road are brilliant, they used to be crap but I had one from almighty cod (used to be don bees) when I was home and it was lush.

Dont know whether that was because I was craving NE fish and chips like

the odd cod DESPERATE. WORST FISH IN THE TOWN.
3 x seaton, almighty cod, youngs, tail end (the crap one) NOT A GOOD ONE AMONGST THEM. CRAP SEASIDE RESORT QUALITY. The one near Hornseys was BRILLIANT.
Jutty road (which is suprisingly very good) NOOOOOOO......IT'S HORRIBLE!!! GREASY BATTER.
oxford road. BEST OF A BAD BUNCH. PATTIES SPOT ON.
verrels. IS CRAP. C.R.A.P. (and hasn't been Verrills for decades.)
fens shops (the biggest fish in town) RUBBISH. MINISCULE CHIPS. NO GOOD SINCE KENNY WENT.
rossy shops. NO GOOD SINCE RENE WARNES LEFT IN THE 90'S
Britannia fisheries (near the old shakesphere pub) HORRIBLE. cHEAP AND CHEERFUL FOR MARTYRS KIDS.
Marinas in the town. NEVER BEEN.
Joanna's. NO WAY. HORRIBLE. NICKY'S WAS GOOD.

Rick Stein.

Ah Martyrs chippies.

Take one uncut loaf and rip in half (assuming dining in pairs.)
Tear out the inards
smear half a pound of butter inside
Fill with chips.
Back to school with fat belly and smile on face.

Oxy Road is canny, as is Verrills.

The one next to Hornsey's has re-opened and is top notch.

The one on the marina is canny too.

There are a lot of sub-standard ones kicking about like, although they may still be better than what some of our exile friends are having to put up with!

Cinnamons on the marina, cafe india on whitby street or if you fancy a drive out the place on the A66 just outside Darlington (the one that used to be a little chef) is worth the trip.

My friend has took over the elcho in curry street and made it into a nice clean shop and it must be the cheapest in the town, £3.50 for fish and chips and its all the best gear and big portions

Best Indian I've been to is Akbars on Linthorpe Road in the Boro closely followed by Spice Cube at the Gate in Newcastle. The standard of Indian is this town is shite as well as chippies! Greasy, bland, and full of food colouring is normally the order of the day. Cinnamons is decent though. I used to like them until I actually went to India and tasted how nice the scran really is, for example a masala shouldn't really be bright red with squirty cream on top !

Speaking of Indians, did you know that all references to 'niggers' and 'injuns' in the novel 'Huckleberry Finn' are going to be filtered out??
I feel quite cross about this and intend to start a petition.

(PS There's far too little thread-deviation on the Bunker these days...)

Mrs G i was going to put that earlier they have also took half-breed out and replaced it with half-blood, saying that its harder to teach using these terms.

How thick are kids if they dont know what "injun" is

The Dilshads on church street is by far the best value.... Massively underrated...

The two on the marina (Spices and Poppadoms) are also very good. I think Spices probably edges it over there, went there for new year and they gave our group a few free bottles of wine as well which was very nice.

The best one I have been to in the north east is on yarm high street opposite the black bull, I can't remember the name but it is quality....

As for chippies I think Fossies in Oxy Road is about the best but chippies aren't really my sort of scran. I agree with Mandy regarding the ones on Seaton - for the seaside they are shit especially when compared to what the chippies in Whitby are like...!

My mrs went there with the littleun the other day and she said it is under new management and it is not as nice as it has been all the other times we have been

As for Indians, Cafe India would be my choice, a lot of lads I work with live up Sunderland way and loads of them say there is an Indians in Penshaw which is really nice

In Hartlepool it's Cafe India for me, in Seaham there's a place called Mango on the sea front that is brilliant. In Sunderland then I'd go to the aforementioned Shagorita's on Seaburn or Cafe Blue Cobra in the centre. In Newcastle Saffron's on the quayside is the place to be.

Kerala (Southern Indian) food is the way forward. Much lighter and tastier than a 'normal' Indian, I can't wait until it gets more popular and is available in more places. You can eat shitloads of it and still have a few pints afterwards, as it doesn't give you the bloat. No idea why as the ingredients are pretty much the same.

funny, my folks live in Seaton and they use it regularly and yet i've been in 3 times and hate the place.

Always enjoyed the golden gate in church st and was in there after the oldham game last week. They even laid on some cabaret......4 chavs effing and blinding, on there mobiles, drinking lager, rose and baileys all at the same time and when the owner said he had no sambooka, they suggested 'why don't you fooking go out at get some'. I wish snowy was there, he would describe these folk perfectly, absolute scum of the earth rage

I am absolutely convinced they didn't pay but thought it best not to hang around to find out

i've just read blood meridian by cormac mccarthy. its set in the same era, and has copious use of both the n word and the i word.

plus infanticide, necrophilia, gang rape, sodomy, paedophilia, genocide, and extremely graphic and mindless violence.

theres also a scene where they drown and shoot puppies.

Have they made a film of it?

Few mates have been saying the Dilshad is lovely at the moment. In particular the thali where you get two starters, 3 smallish mains, rice, naan, poppadom all on one plate.
