Bit of a random one I know, but just thinking about great players in the Premiership recently I thought about these two - and I can't really put a rizla paper between them.

Gascoigne in his pomp was superior for pace and beating a man - his power to blast past his opponent looked phenomenol. However, Scholes, for his range of passing and intelligence, plus the fact he notches six-yarders and fantastic 30-yard-on-the-bounce volleys have to make him a rival to Gazza. In fact, thinking about it, these two are so blessed with skill it makes Frank Lampard look like the total fraud that he is (can't believe he's got more points than Gerrard in the Fantasy League this season, by the way).

I'd reckon Gascoigne takes it by a nose, just out of pure nostalgia from watching him on Italia '90 upto his knee injury. I reckon he was the best in the world up to his knee injury. sad

Depends on in what way you're talking really - Gazza had skill to burn but his prime didn't last long enough and I'd argue that even by the time he reached the Smoggies he was a shadow of his former self. Scholes meanwhile has looked after himself for most of his career and still looks good enough for International Football - and I'm sure if you asked the majority of managers whether they'd prefer the often erratic genius and personal disasters of Gascoigne or the dependability and consistency of Scholes there'd be no contest.

But if it was between Gazza at his imperious best and Scholes I think it would have be the Gazza...Sorry Paul (Scholesy)

Problem with both is that they can't tackle, would be great in an exhibition game but when it matters you'd have to pick one and a defensive minded player, or start fiddling with three man midfields with one holding player.

One of the big criticisms of Erickson that sticks is that he sacrificed the balance in the midfield in favour of picking four individuals. Gerrard and Lampard in the middle got in each other's way, both wanting to go forward and make the same runs. OK Gerrard in particular is a better tackler, but it was only once we stuck Hargreaves in there (in a role he's very good in) to break up play that we looked like a proper team. I think the same would apply trying to make Gazza and Scholes work.....

I'd go Scholes.

Played consistently at the top for over 12 years now, something Gazza didnt have the brain power to do.

If only he'd sorted his personal life out he could have been bigger than Pele.

Shame he didn't sign for Man Utd instead of Spurs, being up in Manchester instead of London could have saved him.

Personal preference would be Gascoigne if I was selecting as a fan, Scholes if I was a manager. I think most people would say the same.

i think they could both fit into most teams but i'd go with scholes for his consistently good performances over the years, shame hes not still playing for england.

gazza was a fool to himself, listening to too many @rseholes and hangeronners (if theres such a word confised ). his mates and estranged wife knacked most of his career up and he did the rest himself

Although I also heard it was a well know newspaper editor who's first name sounds the same as the plural of a sort of jetty of which there is a well known on at Southend.

Actually, it doesn't sound the same at all. It's a different word for a jetty like Southend *** or Wigan ***.

In plain English Fens; Gazza allegedly beat up their lass because she admitted that Piers Morgan was their childs father and not Gazza. The scottish footballer was a cryptic joke because none exist.
