Ive had a text telling me that Police are stopping drivers & issuing £60 fixed penalties (& 3 points) for driving with snow on the car roof as it is dangerous.

I have no idea how true this is,there is a lot of chat around the net but no official yes or no.

Anyone know ?

I bet it was Fetish Bob who text you!

I personally think The chances of getting 3 points on your licence for having snow on your roof are slim to nil. On your windscreen impairing your view however...

So what happens when it starts snowing while your driving? Are you ment to stop every 10 minutes to clear the snow off your roof?

This is what was said on TFM yesterday after they spoke to the police.
The Police are not actively stopping people with snow on their roofs but if it falls onto their windscreen and restricts their view they could be stopped and done for dangerous driving, failure to remain in control of their vehicle or something else (which I can't remember).

Easiest thing to do is to brush the snow off the roof before your journey, save yourself the hastle.

It's unlikely to settle on your roof whilst your driving. Suppose if you are stuck in a traffic jam however, that could be a different story.

Or use the windscreen wipers like everyone else with common sense

There was a crash on the A1 the other day caused by this, someone had snow on their roof that had turned to a large sheet of ice, they had to brake sharply and it covered the windscreen. They then went into the back of someone else.

The police would never fine anyone, I've had texts about it as well, probably started by someone who was sick of having chunks of ice bouncing off his car halfway down a motorway!

You could damage to your wiper linkage trying to move 6 inches of snow off your windscreen.
I had 6 inches on my roof when I left work yesterday that had fell within about 7 hours.

Detatching your wiper linkage in the process, then having to pay to get it fixed! It's all I've been bloody doing all week

as long as you clear your screen, windows to allow visibility you have no fears of being stopped over snow on roof

But if you have an accident caused by snow sliding from your roof onto your windscreen and blocking your view then don't be surprised to get hit with a fine and some penalty points.

given that the vehicle will be moving forward and any snow will be blowing off the back of the vehicle it is unlikely to cause an accident.
in the event of braking sharply and dislodging any snow from the roof you have already hit the other car so the snow did not cause the accident.
so basically unless you are driving in reverse i think your argument is somewhat flawed

Incorrect Mr Bus.

On Tuesday morning I was on the A689 just past Wynyard, the lazy get in the car in front hadn't cleared his roof. On approaching the roundabout he slowed down and all of the snow from the roof of his car slid onto his windscreen and blocked it. He then came to as swift a halt as he could leaving his car stationary on the roundabout while he had to get out and clear it as his wipers obviously couldn't manage the job. As I was driving with a big gap between us due to the conditions he didn't cause a pile up, but whether or not anybody went into him while he was parked on the roundabout I don't know as I was away along the road by then.

so the person going into the back of him would have been responsible.
as the driver stopped and cleared the obstruction.
next hypothetical situation please

Feel free to ignore the point regards whether or not his stationary position on the roundabout could've caused an accident.

Or, hypothetically if the blockage had caused him to inadvertantly swerve into another lane and hit somebody.

I saw a real situation that I mentioned above.

Someone slowed down sharply, had their view blocked, panicked then went into the back of another car.

Do you want photographic evidence as well like?

What if there's snow on the roof of your bus?

because of the shape of the bus front any snow on the roof would shoot forward onto the road or other vehicle in front and not obscure my view

they should have simply stopped when the snow obscured their view.
drivers fault for panicking.

any resulting accidents would have been caused by the drivers following not driving with due care and attention ie a stationary vehicle with either hazards on or a door open should have indicated to other road users there was a problem in front.

Or, hypothetically if the blockage had caused him to inadvertantly swerve into another lane and hit somebody.
once again drivers fault for panicking and swerving.dont they still teach emergency stops as part of driving tuition  [/quote]

I'll take that bet, name your amount, as you know I don't drive so why the F*** would anything like that, if true be of concern to me. I'm sure Groove can confirm the text he received wasn't from me.

I can indeed confirm that the text wasnt from Bob
This one however...

"For a 9am start at work you should leave the house on foot at 8:30 with the snow scraper, start with the front windscreen before doing the back windscreen then go to the drivers side windows, finish off on the passenger side & arrive in the driving seat for 8:40"

Insecure Load - It should have been roped and sheeted.

30 years ago in Carlisle it cost me 70 Quid and an endorsement.
Its getting cheaper.

the one that's pissing me off is where they've cleaned their windscreen but that's all .... left their lights covered and most important of all their indicators.
