Just got my son a new laptop. He says it keeps crashing. Its got windows 7, ahd a dual core prosessor, and 4gb of memory. Anyone have ant ideas about what I can do? Will it have hundereds of programs starting at default, and if so how do I remove them from start up.

Cheers sctatchinghead :uhoh:

These new laptops are queer fkrs like. I bought a new one earlier this year, sounds dead similar, and the memory was practically full as soon as I switched it on even though it's meant to be massive. Fortunately it hasn't crashed on me yet but I'm buggered if I understand it.

to remove progs from start up
click on windows logo on bottom left of toolbar
click on all programs
scroll to start up
click on start up and progs will display
right click on each prog and delete from start up

this does not remove the prog from computer it merely stops them running from boot up
has he installed any progs since you got pc the prob may lie with 1 of them

Type msconfig in the start menu bar, right click on the icon that appears and click run as adminitrator. Go into the startup tab and untick anything you don't want to come on at the beginning. press OK and reboot.

Your best going through whats installed already. If its bought from the likes of PC World / Currys, Comet etc. They come with all sorts of sh**e installed.

To do that go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program and take the likes of Word 2007/2010 Trial off. AOL, eBay and the works. Just remove them and also remove the folder associated with them.

Any probs give me a PM and I'll try guide you further... Good luck!

That's where I bought mine, I'll give that a go this week and see how I get on!

Cheers.

It's not really the slowing it down, it's the fact that it has the memory nearly full even though it's hundreds of GB?!

Especially make sure you get rid of the trial anti virus programs and install AVG or anyone of a number of other free AV's. These are so heavy duty its unreal and they take up so much unnessesary resources. Check the technical forum on this site its been discussed in depth.

To check your startup programs download ccleaner and click on tools then startup. Itunes does not need to be loaded but always does, same story with just about every program installed, they all want to be loaded at startup these days and every one slows down your computer.

I think you mean hard drive storage space rather than memory - they are different.
