On the upside there is always this:

I wonder if the French govt. would have the balls to do the same.
(The French also have an ancient tradition of bullfighting - they imported the idea from Spain, oh, must be more than fifty years ago now.)

Is it a recent thing in France? Round here they go on like it is an ancient Occitan tradition but I've never thought to check.

It's a much more ancient Spanish tradition that spilled over the Pyrenees in the early 19th century. The govt put a stop to it at the start of the 20th century.
Then they passed an animal cruelty law in 1951 that was badly worded enough to make bullfighting legal.

Now if you're talking about the course camarguaise, that's a different kettle of fish altogether and really is an ancient tradition. I've seen a few myself and it's the bulls that are judged, not the awsesomely acrobatic razeteurs. A good bull will become a stud - which is a wee bit impossible for a bull killed in a feria!

There was a photo of it in the Mirror - it seems the bull was upset by a bloke in the stand.

He was wearing an red away new England football shirt at the time.

Mad dogs and Englishmen, eh....
